Hence, "needs a definition of disrespect", because "being vitriolic with others" is not a mandatory part of disrespect. You can easily disrespect someone who disrespects you by ignoring them and not accounting for their opinions when making decisions, for example. Insulting them is not necessary.
If anything, insulting them is mutually exclusive with actual disrespect because it shows that you care about their emotions enough to try and spoil them.

The Bible tells us to forgive others.
The Bible is (partially) written/edited by shitty people who want to be forgiven without repenting for their misdeeds so that they can do more misdeeds. The extent of disrespect needed is not forgiving them if they had not repented.
If you don't hold unrepented actions against whoever did them (i.e. forgive them) all it does is let them do it again.
And again, problem with definition of forgiveness. "I will no longer dwell on this" shares the word with "I will not exact punishment in response to this action", even though they're very different concepts (the former is what lets you feel not-bad). Just like how "respect" shares three, and possibly more, meanings: "treating someone like an equal", "treating someone like a superior" and "accounting for someone's position".

That isn't disrespect… That's just not taking their historically meaningless opinions into consideration.

That is your personal belief.

So call them out on their behaviors, and just say that they are a disrespectful person. That's actually a lot less effort than just relying on your own fallible judgement to determine they are disrespectful and then taking the time to think of ways to disrespect them.

You see, when people talk about this philosophy, they generally are talking about being unpleasant towards that person that they deem disrespectful. And as it relies on your own fallible judgement, it's already a risky move from the start because if you make a mistake and disrespect someone who was actually not disrespectful, then you suddenly are the only bad person. Not to mention that, as I said, it often won't help.

Belief is for unverifiable, subjective, or false things. Like "Bible is totally the word of God" as opposed to a collection of jewish folk tales, post-jewish folk tales, historical accounts, good life advice, bad life advice, unbelievably terrible life advice, rules for regular christians, rules for priests, and other stuff from the last three thousand years or so (arbitrarily assembled in the last 2000, which alone completely invalidates it as being anything but a creation of Man), out of 6000 years of existence of writing and 60000 years of existence of modern human. And a lot of people who wrote and/or edited it did so with express purpose of getting away with their shit, like anything about unconditional obedience or unconditional forgiveness for anyone worldly (including "conduits of God's will" like priests and prophets).
You want to follow it? No problem, even respectable if you inevitably cherry-pick the good parts if you don't you end up DAESH but it's about as trustworthy as any other collection of religious guidelines (such as Sumerian, Mayan, Hindu, Egyptian, Greco-Roman…) regarding how the world works spiritually.
they generally are talking about being unpleasant
Which is, as I've just established, pointless.
if you make a mistake and disrespect someone who was actually not disrespectful, then you suddenly are the only bad person
Hence, asymmetrical (in)tolerance and asymmetrical disrespect bad.

While I agree that every potential new user is entitled to be tolerated so he could have a fair chance to fit in, I also must agree that you can't just open your door to people like Dilarius, Ciaran or TSP and not expect them to cause nothing but damage and problems to this place.

I suppose that the ideal middle ground would be giving everyone a fair chance to fit in regardless of their beliefs, and if they abuse it to cause trouble, just throw the book at them without making any exceptions.

First off, pretending I'm putting words in your mouth is hilarious. I have done nothing but respond to the actual things you've said without rephrasing them in any way. You are the only one here who has deliberately rephrased things I've said in your own words to argue against something that wasn't even said. You are the one arguing in bad faith, not me.

Secondly: The censors gaining power isn't a consequence of that, and I've already explained why. Come up with something new. Your argument is circular at this point.

Third: "That is not for you to decide." Buddy, I'm not deciding anything. You've yet to make a statement of actual substance on the matter beyond "This is how it works" and "This is what happens" assertions with no backup beyond a singular example that doesn't even fit the metrics for tolerance. I don't need to 'decide' you had nothing to say, your posts make that clear on their own.

Fourth: "I get people I target to leave or respond in kind, repeat until your oh so tolerant site is wasteland or toxic dump." You're allowed to be rude and they're allowed to be rude to you. People 'left' because it was one sided, primarily. Because they couldn't fire back, or push back. Freedom of expression is more important than being comfortable all of the time. You can't create an echo chamber in a place where the right to mock people in that echo chamber exists. You are equating two completely different things again.

Furthermore: targeting people is only acceptable until it breaches into harassment, which is already against site policy on these places. With that protection in place, you can expect to be banned if you target every individual who disagrees with you until they leave. If people can't take mockery, they shouldn't be online. If you commit targeted group harassment of an individual, you should be banned. It's that simple.

"You're literally handing over the keys with the kind of rules you propose." You aren't 'handing over the keys' by being tolerant. You've yet to say anything of substance that isn't "This leads to you doing more than just being tolerant" which, by definition, reaches beyond what I'm suggesting. As long as you maintain control over the rules and continue to allow freedom of expression, then you haven't handed the keys to anyone.

"People who are insulted enough will leave instead of insulting back." This goes both ways too, you know. Insults are commonplace on the internet, curating for them is just asking to fail. People have a right to voice their opinions, even the not so nice ones, about other people too. It's not a big deal until it turns into targeted harassment, which is above and beyond the scope of voicing an opinion.

Unless you have something of actual substance or note to say in your next reply, this will be the last time I respond to you with something other than "Got an argument yet? No? Okay."

Also, by the way? "Asymmetry works both ways." is the most hilarious statement I've ever heard. Psst: If it's going both ways, it's not asymmetrical. It's symmetrical.

"I suppose that the ideal middle ground would be giving everyone a fair chance to fit in regardless of their beliefs, and if they abuse it to cause trouble, just throw the book at them without making any exceptions."
Nobody, not even me, is arguing that you don't throw the book at them if they break the rules, but you also don't write rules that ban subjects of conversation or target one side of arguments and you don't disallow anyone to talk about anything for any reason within the rules. That is the only way you can claim to be for free expression, in any measure.

@Anonymous #1325
What I'm talking about is how our little group here got its start. It worked fine, despite the slings and arrows of every single other group raining down on us, we held firm together. This is how the pony community was formed, back in the day. Our first stance ever was for freedom of expression and it's a stance we should hold to this day. It worked. Regardless of what anyone says it worked, if it hadn't, we wouldn't be here. You don't NEED to curb conversation, or others coming by and deriding you, or your own right to say 'fuck you buddy' right back in order to have civil, friendly group discussion. Anything else is just faff that gets in the way of the right of expression.

@Anonymous #A99E
What's being suggested is: "I know the trojan horse is a decoy, so let's let them build and deliver it and laugh at them the whole time. We already know not to let them into the city, we don't need to stop them from building the horse."

@NorthyDreams
My suggestion is to keep a very close eye on them if they decide to come here and depending on how they acted on Derpi should determine how many chances they should get.

People should be treated equally under the rules here, regardless of how they behaved offsite. Once they break the rules, then we can throw the book at them. That's how it works. You don't bend the rules for anyone, good or bad.

The only people in my Discord server that I ban before they join and break the rules are people with a history of spamming things like gore and child pornography.
Anonymous #428A
Something I don't think was given as much attention as it should have been during the original drama was the mods approving aponty's merge request for a mouthpiece edit of one of his comics, inflating the positive vote count. Doesn't matter so much now, but the possibility of false support having been generated elsewhere crosses my mind from time to time.

The child pornography spammer isn't someone I have actually had to deal with myself. But I've heard plenty of accounts from people telling me that a specific person spammed that, and so I opted to just ban him from my server before he even joined.

The gore spammers are people I reported to Discord, and some of them got their accounts deleted, but others did not.

Next question then: If you don't have credible information, then why are you acting upon it?
If you have been shown or told that this person is doing this from a reliable source, then contacting the proper authorities for a follow-up investigation with the information for this person that you have is just a matter of due course. The only time I would not do that is if I have no information at all or if someone I know has already done so comprehensively. Emails aren't incredibly hard for the police to trace, discord accounts are tagged with emails. Even if they're using a proxy for logging into the email, it's still worth a shot. Either way, this is getting beyond the scope of this thread.
