My big problem with that is that it’s Far Cry. Ubisoft has had a misery fetish for years with this series. All the silly radio programs and joke weapons and 80’s movie callbacks don’t fit in a game that is going to be ending on the series’ now traditional “nothing you did mattered” note. Either the Castro stand-in will retain power, or one of the PC’s allies will take over and become a Stalin-esque dictator. That’s my guess for what choices will be available in the final mission.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but you’d be astonished how common a misery fetish is. Look at written sci-fi since around 1990. It’s all misery porn. It’s been going on since the late 60s, and the “cyberpunk” authors of the late 1970s and early 1980s - what the Wikipedia articles mysteriously omit is that most of them were Canadian, and all of them were the exact sort of people we call “SJWs” and “woketards” now - made an entire little tiny subgenre out of their relentlessly humorless, relentlessly didactic, relentlessly political misery porn about Those Dumb Hicks Getting Theirs Real Good in post-nuclear America. Now people like Peter Watts are the genre’s new rockstars. Everyone aspires to top his gory misery-porn about biological warfare and psychopathic vampires torturing aliens and get a Woke Hugo from Woke SWFA.

Not sure what you’re referring to, can you cite some examples please?

I suppose it doesn’t really matter to me in the end, since I don’t play Far Cry. Apparently I’m one of the only people in the world who recognized that Vaas was overrated before the game was released, so I didn’t hop on this little Ubisoft bandwagon with everyone else.

He had promise but yeah. Ultimately they kind of fucked up with him. My biggest problem with Vaas was that they didn’t do much with him besides parade him out from time to time and say “look how QUIRKY!” And then he died mid-game only for some complete fucking nobody that I didn’t give a shit about to drop out of the god damn sky and declare himself the new villain for the second half of the game. He should have A) become increasingly unhinged and extreme in his plays to the point that his own people started deserting him and B) not been replaced by a complete fucking nobody that I didn’t give a shit about who dropped out of the god damn sky. The end game should have those two groups duking it out for control while you played the increasingly painful thorn in both their sides.

Also the go-native ending sucked. The gameplay was considerably more fun, though.

The Bad Ending lives up to it’s name (in that it was bad), but to be honest it made more sense then the “Good” Ending, where a mentally unhinged Jason just decides to return to normal society because he randomly decided he doesn’t like killing people anymore. Even though his ending narration makes it very clear he’s still deranged and is definitely going on a grisly murder spree.

As for Vaas, yeah he just seemed to be “lul, he’s such a psycho! How quiiiiirkyyyyy!”. I couldn’t get invested in that, Quirks are not substitutes for Character Traits.
Also, thanks to that character an entire generation grew up thinking the definition of Stubbornness is actually the definition of Insanity, so fuck Vaas.

Insanity:
Mental derangement, the inability to determine right from wrong and/or fantasy from reality.

“Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting things to change”
  • Stubbornness

To be fair, he was just quoting. It was already old and trite long before Far Cry went into development. That “definition of insanity” thing comes from a pamphlet published in 1981.

Yeah, and he was wrong too. >:P
Just because his Theory of Relativity was a revolutionary discovery for Physics, doesn’t mean he can just going changing the definitions of words however he pleases.

Everything ever written by Charles Stross or Peter Watts would be good to examine as a starting point. Then look at Octavia Butler’s work generally and the Parable novel series from the 1990s in particular. Just about all the original 1980s cyberpunk written by the original cyberpunk creators, Gibson, Sterling, Cadigan, Rucker, and Shiner, was well written stories about horrible people in a horrible ruined world, which induced apathy in the reader. It didn’t age well and it is probably just as well that just about all of it was printed as filler in between ads for car stereos and flying saucer stories in Bob Guccioni’s 1980s gonzo pop-science magazine, Omni.

I read skiffy since childhood and I’ve given up on science fiction as a genre with a future. The future isn’t what it used to be, I guess. The only skiffy I still read was written before the end of the Cold War. I am repelled by the humorless, didactic, finger-wagging wokeshit, gayshit, and misery porn that I saw in just about everything I picked up and flipped through back when I still frequented brick-and-mortar bookstores. Even Hugo Award winners have all been more of the same for many years now. With each year that passes I find myself drawn to reread more Pournelle, more Niven, more Poul Anderson, more Philip Jose Farmer, more James Blish, more H. Beam Piper, more Harlan Ellison (he was a Leftist, but he wasn’t a humorless turd about it, unlike, say, N. K. Jemisin, or Rachel Swirsky) and more Stanislaw Lem. I am bored with wokeshit. I am bored with sparkly vampires and the Zombie Apocalpse. I am bored by authors lecturing their readers about politics, at least when it’s done with less skill than Heinlein had. I just want to grill read.

Not the song I was thinking of.

@FeatherTrap
Games that sell themselves specifically on being incredibly moddable need to stop hardcoding every god damn thing. “This RPG is designed for modders to do anything they can imagine. Mind you that we’ve hardcoded character classes, races, skills, spells, abilities, AI behavior, item classes, level caps and animations. BUT you can make a fucking map (with the hardcoded terrain sets)! SO MODDABLE!!!”

Ugh, that’s the worst thing… >.<
I remember hearing that XCOM 2 released mod tools that were essentially just shy of the game’s own source code. Not sure if that’s true but it would explain the variety of mods for that game.

You stand only to gain from releasing such tools for your game. For fucks sake–I’M STILL PLAYING MORROWIND. Last time I played it was about a week and a half ago. And I’ve been playing some new (to me) modules in Neverwinter Nights for the last week.

Neverwinter Nights, now there’s a classic.

Hordes of the Underdark is still the best CRPG experience out there, I go back and play it at least once a year. Sometimes I bother playing through Shadows of Undrentide first, but Hordes was when Bioware was really pushing their engine to the limit.

And then modders came along and said “hold my beer”

I just finished playing Hordes a few days ago. I keep meaning to bring Deekin along tp the end, but the first chapter is truthfully a bit of a slog so I tend to jump to the second. Also fuck whatever dumbshit at Beamdog decided to take his wings away. His wings that you can still ask him about.

Now I’m playing Aielund Saga. Didn’t have internet back when I got NWN so I never got to try any of these.

I was thinking about something the other day. I think Deekin may be responsible for our modern love of kobolds. Nobody gave a fuck about them before; they we fucking goblins with scales (and not the hot kind). Then along comes Deekin and they become all cute. People start wanting to play as or with them. A decade later and the internet is drowning in kobold waifus and boi waifus.

I am totally okay with that, tbh. Kobolds are the best, especially kobold bards.
“Favored Class: Sorcerer” my ass, have you seen the amount of Kobold bards since NWN?

I’m actually okay with that thou, in my current campaign setting I’m making a few subraces of the cute little buggers. Like the Dread Kobolds, who live in the jungle and are known for their mastery of giant amphibious lizards that they ride as mounts (favored class Ranger obviously), and my personal favourite the High Kobolds. I wrote them to have a cultural fascination with the arts, especially music. I think they’re just adorable~ ^ ^

Sounds sweet. I’ve liked the little guys ever since Undrentide. They’re like this race that’s right on the cusp of ascending to a proper civilization. The first reptilians to do so on Faerun since the fall of the ancient Lizardfolk empire tens of thousands of years prior.
