I see. Well, that’s a shame, considering there’s probably at least some stuff on there that’s gonna be lost forever then, although I guess understandable from their point of view.

I just got that and it’s a really great game. Mixing the puzzles with the turn based stuff seemed a bit gimmicky at first but it’s actually a really great combo and it’s satisfying to do them right when they actually throw a challenge at you. The puzzles stay a little too easy a little too long for my tastes, but it is Mario and it’s primary audience is like a decade younger than me, so what can ya do lol.

And yeah, the music is rad.

I just spent the day putting together a brand new PC with a friend. It’s… it’s beautiful. And fucking gargantuan. And heavy enough to keep the house on the ground the next time a hurricane comes through. It’s been some 16 years since I bought a new PC, and even then it wasn’t a gaming rig. And now I’m going to celebrate by playing something that’s been sitting in my library for over a year: DOOM 2016.

… tomorrow. Because the projected download time is “one day, six hours”.

Heh. I’ve been playing about a used system that’s about 10-12 years old system (the sticker on the side advertised it coming with Windows 7 as a major feature). Up until now, however, about the most advanced game I could run was Dragon’s Dogma, and I had to keep a shop fan on the system or else it would overheat running it. Man, does it feel good to stick my hand behind the tower and feel COOL AIR rather than a borderline air dryer.

–Thermaltake View 71 TG four-sided tempered glass full tower.

–AMD Ryzen 7 3700x processor.
-8 core, 16 thread.
-3.6ghz base, 4.4ghz max boost.

–AMD XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT Thicc III Ultra (I swear to god it’s really named “thicc”).
-8GB GDDR6
-4.0 PICe
-Somehow I lucked out and got the gold foil’d limited edition version. Must have been a mistake at the warehouse.

–2x Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro RAM sticks
-8gb (each)
-DDR4
-3200mhz

TUF B550-Plus Gaming Motherboard
-4xDIMM
-128gb
-DDR4

–900w power supply
-under/over voltage protection
-135mm LED fan.

–4 extra 120x120x25mm LED fans

I just keep staring at it. Watching the RAM change colors like there’s a liquid rainbow flowing through it. Sticking my hand behind it and enjoying the feel of cool air rather than weak dragon’s breath. Watching the CPU fan spin. Just need to get used to the activity light being red instead of yellow. I keep noticing it out of the corner of my eye and thinking something’s wrong.

I didn’t pick most of the parts out myself, of course. I have near-zero experience with this kind of thing; all I knew was “pick a company and stick with it” and “make sure the processor is at least 3.5ghz & 4 cores” (I wanted to get one that was… I think it was something like 12 cores & 4+ghz base but it was just too expensive). I had a friend help me put together a shopping list about two weeks ago. The last of the parts came in two days ago.

Now all that remains to see is whether I’ll need to run a new power line for it. In the past, having too many things on at once on this side of the house could trip the circuit breaker and I’ve now upgraded to a system with, amongst other things, a 50% stronger power supply and a substantially beefier card. We’ll see what happens, I suppose.

It’s sad I have no clue when the specs on my computer is. I have had this computer possible for 15-16 years I can’t even remember what year I bought it.

If you’re using any mobern version of Windows (7 or higher) and are not on a laptop, you can pull up basic computer information quickly by hitting WIN + PAUSE (That’s the Windows Key + Pause/Break, which is located immediately above PAGE UP on most keyboards). This will give you your operating system, processor and RAM total at minimum. Once you’re on that screen you can easily get into Device Manager and open Display Adapters to get your video card.

For anything beyond that, (such as motherboard model, RAM brand/grade, etc.), you either need to get into BIOS, install a stat tool like CPU-Z, or have built your rig yourself and memorized your parts like a good tech nerd.

@Officer Hotpants
Sometimes, reading “modern” rig stats makes me jealous being stuck with DDR3, but my i7-4790K’s been too good to me to rebuild.

In other news, Risk of Rain 2 hit 1.0 two days ago. Haven’t had this much fun dying constantly to my own stupidity and being frustrated as hell over cursed runs since The Binding of Isaac.

Congrats on your new computer, building your own PC is an amazing feeling. Built one myself about a year and a half ago. Love this thing, and it feels awesome to play AAA games with the highest settings on something you put together lmao.

I know what you mean. I don’t have the heart to throw out my old system after all these years. I removed the hard drive and added it to the new system (I was NOT looking forward to spending months redownloading things) but I’m going to keep it as a backup.

@Jomok0
Indeed. And I appreciate that the “comfortable” zone for this thing is FAR beyond where I intend to run games. I’m not planning on playing at 140fps ultra-max everything. I mean maybe older shit, sure, but I have no intention of straining my new baby.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with playing old games. I keep copies of Might & Magic III-IV-V, Eye of the Beholder 1-3, Epic Pinball, Heretic, Tyrian 2000, and Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition with tuned DOSBox configs installed on every PC in the house “for emergencies”, and keep every old game I have that I own on Steam or GOG (or just can find the disks for in general) installed on my personal rig alongside all of my ROMs and ISOs. I play most of them rather frequently, especially Might & Magic 4+5: World of Xeen.
