You forgot Legend of Dragoon. You absolute philistine.

I tried to play Vagrant Story once but I couldn’t figure it out, and I’m pretty sure I must have been doing something wrong because the first boss probably wasn’t supposed to take 40 minutes to kill. I finally got past him, saved, quit and ended up not playing it again before I had to return it.

You see, I’m one of those heathens that didn’t actually like Legend of Dragoon and can’t see all the hype about it, even though I breathe RPGs. Suppose I could go back and give it another chance; I do own it and have ISO’d it already.

As to difficulties with Vagrant Story, the issue is it has a really harsh resistance system; you needed to keep one weapon of each physical type (blunt, slash, pierce) on hand at all times or you were relatively fucked. You could bypass it by chaining attacks until your risk was high enough to give you an ungodly damage bonus, but if you screwed up your timing on a single strike you’d be dead in a single hit.

You just reminded me that I lost my Realm Grinder save paste when I reformatted. The curse is lifted! I’m free!

After all this time I just remember the game being doable throughout the tutorial until I got to the boss. Then it’s over half an hour just doing chip damage to him. And as for Realm Grinder, the thing that hurt me more than anything else was when I left it to site nearly a year, thought “I should see where it’s at” and loaded it up only to find that I’d reset the game and hadn’t bought a single buff or building before closing it the last time I’d played.

Was an unlocked offline version of the final update of AI:TG ever made/found? The one I have is still 1.828, and the last version was 1.832; with Kongregate looking more and more like it’ll purge its archive in the foreseeable future, and Tukkun never making good on the re-dev, I’d really like to get the final version offline.

I upgraded my laptop’s RAM from 2GB to 4GB two days ago, visiting a small-business computer parts shop, and now my laptop can better handle Them’s Fightin’ Herds! I paid 40 bucks for it and I feel it was worth it for the convenient location of the store and to support a small business.

I bought Them’s Fightin’ Herds two years before but now I can play the game at decent framerate with 3D backgrounds and at a resolution where the text is readable.

Has anyone ever played that game? I’ve played a bit of the one story chapter that went up on April 30.

Nice. I’ve been putting together a new system, myself. How’s the game? I’m not much of a fighting game person but I’ve been meaning to get it for ages just to support the devs.

GameStop’s “rebranding” Kong. They stopped accepting submissions earlier this year and closed some features (game chatrooms, for one). Meanwhile, they’re pushing their new “Kartridge” launcher/storefront app. There are some expectations that the flash archive end of the site will shut down completely by the beginning of next year.

As hesitant as I am to agree with that shithole of a company (former employee, not gonna go into it in this thread), I cannot actually blame them. With the death of Flash, maintaining a monetized Flash platform isn’t a sound business choice. Not saying Kartridge is a smart move either - GameStop has been trying to get into the digital distribution market for closing on two decades - but it’s a smarter move than maintaining a dead platform.

Still, will be sad to see the loss of Kongregate. There are some good games there.

I’m interested in seeing what will inevitably rise from the ashes when flash is gone. Because you know someone will create their own player to play them. Probably be better than Flash, too.

Isn’t HTML what’s basically replaced Flash for games and cartoons at this point?
Newgrounds has made a player with the intention of keeping all their old flash stuff functional, dunno if sites like Kongregate will use that or make their own or just die off.

Kongregate never “made their own”. They are (were) a submission platform for other people to submit games. But rather than embracing HTML5 and moving to a WebUnity and HTML5 service like other platforms, they’re rebranding entirely.

@Azure Fang
WebUnity and HTML5 are the forerunners. Current problems are lack of adoption, but it’s either those or nothing for now.

Newgrounds is mostly user submitted too lol. I was saying Newgrounds made a new player with the intention of keeping Flash content on their site functional in the future once Flash is gone. It’s possible Kongregate will do the same, or license Newgrounds’ player.

First and foremost, looks like I need to correct myself. Kong is no longer owned by GameStop. As of 2017, they’re owned by Modern Times Group, a digital entertainment holdings group that owns multiple esports “brands”, including ESL and DreamHack, broadcasting companies in multiple European and Asian countries, multiple radio stations in same, and a satellite broadcasting company. Their purchase of Kongregate is about the time Kong started suddenly and rapidly expanding into mobile.

On July 1, 2020, it was announced that no further game submissions will be accepted, game chat rooms are shutting down, and social features are being disabled, and forum moderators were disbanded, while their focus as a site is now to “help indies develop for their new storefront Kartridge”; these changes are effectively complete as of August 7th. Existing games can still be played until Flash total EOL or until staff decide to pull the plug entirely, but staff are more interested in transitioning developers to the Kartridge storefront/launcher to sell premium games and have not given any information on later preservation of existing content; if you want anything from Kongregate, back it up as there’s no sign that any preservation attempts will be made.
