According to this interview, Disney will end up losing approximately $100 million on Wakanda Forever. If true, this also means that Disney’s losses on the affected films, Lightyear and Strange World, are less than initially reported.

That’s not too bad even if it really needs to make 2 billion on its own. Besides, all the numbers Hollyjew gives us have been massaged to say exactly what they want them to say.

Avatar 2 has been a huge blunder for Disney, and it didn’t need to be. It’s expected to pass Wakanda Forever’s total box office take in only its second weekend, probably landing somewhere between $850 and $900 million globally. If they hadn’t projected so hard that they need over two billion to not be a flop, these numbers would be seen as a triumph. Instead, Disney’s stock is down almost 44% ytd, and the narrative is that this movie is a historic failure.

Even if it was bad behind the scenes, he didn’t have to say it. If Avatar 2 makes $1.8b, no one would ever suspect that that could be a financial disaster, if not for him.

In fact, I don’t fully believe it. If this is in any way accurate, Disney’s currently about a billion dollars deep all the way to movie 5. And Avatar 3 is already in the can. That’s only as much as Amazon blew on one season of Rings of Power, and they have two completed movies to show for it. They appear to be amortizing the pre-production costs of future projects across the earlier ones, if not just outright dumping them all on this movie.

Disney lost $123 billion in market value in 2022. That’s over a fifth of the $542 billion in value that Hollywood as a whole lost.

Avatar 2 is actually doing okay right now. It’s reached $1.4 billion already and it looks like 4 and 5 will be greenlit.

He clarified a while back that it would break even at around $1.5 billion, which is much closer to what I thought it should be. I just hope he tries a bit harder for the final two movies. Based on what little is known, Avatar 3 seems to be shaping up to be the first movie for a third time.

I personally don’t care for it. I’m just pointing out that many people’s predictions it would fail turned out to be wrong. And I was one of the ones hoping it would fail, though it doesn’t really have much competition right now.

Disney is aware of how crap their live action remakes look, so the tie-in books for Little Mermaid feature some pretty cool artwork.

Really hoping the crab and fish aren’t supposed to be Sebastian and Flounder.
I also notice they’re still keeping Ursula a secret.

First one, kinda bland and not very rememberable.

Second one, probably the best of the bunch in terms of visual appeal.

Third one, too much sass.

Fourth one, she’s got a touch to her features that feels like she could be a henchmen for Ursula and be very damn good at it. She’s almost got a Tempest Shadow vibe going on, if Tempest were more focused on espionage and sneaking about.

An Ariel, who’s a black, isn’t so bad. Now, if it were an Ariel, who was a bloke…

Disney: Hold my overpriced beer, I’m about to ruin all the shareholders’ interests.
