The word “dunce” comes from the name of catholic philosopher-theologian John Duns Scotus.
Because his followers argued against Renaissance humanism, the humanists and reformers used the term “duns” or “dunce” as a term of abuse and a synonym for one incapable of scholarship. The meaning of the word later expanded to any stupid person.
A dunce cap is a conical hat that a school pupil is forced to wear to indicate that he or she is a dunce.
