Would it be preferred to list the “best” existing tags or make up new ones for the sake of standardizing?

That would likely be decided on a case-by-case basis, but larger tags are probably going to end up being the dominant ones. Standardizing them is probably a good idea as well, though again that depends.

Honestly it’s best to just list all of them, preferably pointing out which ones are redundant. We’ll be in a better position to decide which ones are the best then. Plus it’ll make aliasing them a lot easier. If you feel there’s a better name for a tag feel free to suggest it.

*sigh*…it’s zecorass. Seriously my dude, it’s good you’re asking questions, but you could really stand to try and do some more detective work on your own.

zecora,butt,solo female

The “solo female” in that search wasn’t technically necessary, but it helped limit it to pictures of just Zecora.

To add to @Anonymous #6144, another way to look for potential tags is to use the tag search. The most common syntax you want to use is wrapping your search in wildcards, ‘\*\[search term\]\*’, this will search for the occurrence of the search term anywhere in the tag name.

For example, ‘\*butter\*’ will match ‘pear butter’, ‘brightbutter’, ‘peanut butter’ etc.

In this particular use case, going to another booru and searching for “implies:butt && implies:[character]” in tag search is very helpful as well.

The way to split multiple characters with same name is to give them different names (“athena pondonia” in this case as she’s a guardian of pondonia), not to play owner with them.

There are some tags, like oc:umbra or oc:penumbra, that could stand some kind of fix. They’re absolute dumpster fires as it is. It’s like there was only enough creativity for one idea, and everyone was stuck having to share it.
