It’s kinda hard to have conversations in real time using the forum, plus it’s not like people that visit this website aren’t already in different discord servers that regroup some of the same users

A discord for customer support unless you think a site ticketing system would be better. I’m interested to hear why you think a discord is a bad idea

Were you not there for most of the past week?  
Users cluster around the mods in discord. THese users are often not users of the forums or meaningful community members otherwise. Over time they grow more and more hostile to anyone the clique disagrees with, and the mods are in that echo box. Mods grow more and more detached from the actual site, losing sight of their users, and every single mod comes from the Discord community because that’s the people they interact with most.  
Most if not all the issues in Derpi boil down to this being what happened.

Discord has positives and negatives.  
The negative is that it is highly insular and leads to a circle jerk that the rest of the website at large is not privy to.  
The positive is effective and swift communications - but only to those that are using it.  
If it is a concrete policy of transparent moderation complete with a page(or thread) documenting moderation with allowable input - the insular nature of discord might be averted.

Are we wanting our mascot to be more “this pony means somethin’ to us, man!” or more “most cute”?

The issue with discord is that it’s extremely personable and absorbing. Nick colors and avatars probably look like irrelevant features but they make it that much more visually engaging.  
So no, please don’t have yet another discord fiasco. Why do we need swiftness when dealing with forum maintenance? Taking a minute to write a detailed post about the issue is better anyways.

Back in the days I remember forums that embedded an IRC-like chat in the page as a shoutbox; if this is feasible to hack into Philomena, it would be a nice way to add real-time communication for those who like it, without forming off-site cliques.

Speak for yourself. And even if some people are in common discord servers, if the server doesn’t have staff, it’s not really a problem. If you happen to be in a discord server with a staff member, then hopefully they have enough professionalism not to handle site matters on a completely unaffiliated discord server.

I don’t think a transparency report is enough to break the insularity of discord. Discord hosts discussion and decisions. If there’s a tight-knit clique, then discord becomes the recruitment grounds for staff. Posting why which comments are deleted by whom in a forum thread doesn’t change any of that. It does prevent subtle abuse of power, of course, but it does nothing against wider community splintering.

I still think there should be a reporting system for bugs or for help with the site, maybe a ticket system like most other customer support

I like Mare Do Well, Princess Cadance, or a floppy disk OC

personally I think a floppy disk oc would be a lot more fun and has a lot more site identity. And theres a lot of room to play to make an oc

For the Floppy Disk pone, please consider the following:
 
You’ve just come home from a long day of work. You flop onto the couch and almost fall asleep, only to feel an awkwardly squarish hoof poking at your belly. You grumble and open the bag of shopping you picked up on the way home, and watch as Floppy Disk’s face lights up at the sight of her favourite meal; a bulky 8-inch square of plastic and fabric, with a tasty metallic center.
 
She sticks her tongue out and you place the floppy disk into her mouth. She looks overjoyed and does a little hoofy-dance as various mechanical noises slowly draw the disk inside.
 
Content with the data, the little, cubular mare hops up and goes to sleep on your chest, making it kind of hard to breath but you daren’t disturb her. Oh well, at least she’s cute.

well if I remember correctly I used to visit this place because the site had a better collection of humanized content. a long long time ago even before I started drawing… well even before I was tempted by foalcon
