Badges

Anonymous #5FD0
In my opinion, there should be only two badges:
  1. Creator: for artists, writers, musicians, etc, who have linked their pages. You lose your badge if there’s 0 posts with your creations left in this site.
  2. Sponsor: for those who are donating to Ponybooru monthly in patreon-like service. You lose your badge if you stop your subsription.

    If there’s other badges, make them all lose-able. So, no “change 1000 tags and have a badge forever” type of stuff, more like “change 1000 tags in the past year and have a badge for 1 year”.

I disagree, if you change 1000 tags you already contributed vastly more than the average freeloader has. Similarly, if there are any donation badges at all (honestly I wouldn’t want any, but I guess some people are encouraged to donate by the shiny sticker which could be useful I suppose) then if anything I’d make it a cumulative donation badge - someone paypalling zizzy $100 deserves a badge more than someone sitting on Patreon for two years at a $2 tier, for example.

In terms of long term stability of the site, the person donating $2 over a longer period of time is gonna help more than the person donating a $100 all at once.

Also disappearing badges? Why? You earned that..and if you take a break from the site you have to earn the same badge again?
Anonymous #B7CA
@Pizzamovies
How so? Unless the financial management is bad and can’t properly put money into a fund for later, the $100 should definitely be more useful than the $48 stretched over two years.

And yeah, that’s what I’m saying. Badges should only disappear when they get upgraded, for a more prestigious version of the badge.

@Pizzamovies
What does that have to do with my argument that someone who does throw $100 is gonna be more helpful than someone paying $2 for two years?

Yes, many people will may more than $2 and for more than two years. And few people will send a $100 one-time donation. But I was replying to 5FD0 who was saying that donation badges should only appear while you’re actively donating, and I was arguing why that’s dumb and donation badges should instead depend on cumulative all-time donations.

To prevent badge creep. You saw how disgusting some user profiles are on derpi, with badges breaking right through the left side of screen and continuing offscreen.
So, you do 4 “events” in a year. Participating in an event gives you a badge. Ten years later, everyone have 40 badges from events alone.
One possible solution is letting users choose 5 badges to display, with all other visible only on profile page, (with pagination to prevent browsers crashing from sheer amount of badges).
Anonymous #B7CA
@Anonymous #5FD0
The solution to that is not to make badges expiring, it’s to not award stupid badges. Those “event” badges are fundamentally the problem, and making them expire is only a hacky workaround rather than eliminating the source of the problem. Tagging or artist badges are not at all the problem, and making those expire is just throwing out the baby with the bath water.

So people who have donated in the past should just go fuck themselves and lose their badge when they can’t support anymore?

@Anonymous #5FD0
That’s a UI issue not a badge issue. Take it up with the developers. Taking away badges for significant achievements/events/jokes is not the answer at all. If anything having badges for stuff increases site activity and involvement. I feel like this is all coming from people who were too lazy to get the badges on Derpi

Argumentum ad hominem, huh? Your arguments were fine, why do you feel the need to make a fallacy?

@Anonymous #B7CA
Yeah, I guess. On derpi, there’s also too much duplicate badges. You can have five artists badges and ten donation badges simultaneously, why? I think too much of moderators’ time was wasted evaluating those badges. Have less badges, but make it count.

Fallacy. Okay.
At most there are only 4 donation badges, derpy, custom pony, Custom cutiemark and pledge level.
For art it makes sense to have lots of art badges because it’s an art site you daft nut.

Did you mean to quote 5FD0 here? Because that was his point, and I’m arguing precisely against this.

@Pizzamovies
You can have lots of art badges but they shouldn’t be cumulative. If you have a “1000 images under artist tag” badge there’s no need for all the previous tiers.
And 4 donation badges is way too fucking much. One makes sense I guess, to advertise your support. But then you’re back to clutter.

This is real money we’re talking about. If I’m giving $15-$20 a month towards a pony site, I’d want something to show my generosity. Especially over time when you have overall donated hundreds of dollars. And you still only have 1 badge…big sad
Anonymous #B7CA
@Pizzamovies
Obviously you’d get a better badge. You’d have a “donated hundreds of dollars” badge while others would only have “donated a couple dozen dollars” badges.
I also believe that people should support the website because they want the website to succeed, not because they want to show off their shiny badge clutter collection for clout in the forums. Acknowledgement badges are nice, but it shouldn’t be something that makes or breaks people’s decision to support, and you shouldn’t have to clutter everyone’s view just to attract cash cows.

Maybe a compromise could be a setting to determine whether badges are visible to a given user. So people like me could turn off non-essential badges, and use the remaining ones to check at a glance what a user does, but badges can still be awarded liberally and other people might prefer to view the whole collection.

That said ultimately it’s not really that important either way, and certainly not right now. But it’s not like I’d boycott the site if the admins start spamming badges or something.

If you ask me. just keep a few important badges showing up on the hotbar of a uploader or whatever or in comments but on profile. have them at the top and the fun ones under them. only showing up on the user page. I fucking worked hard for a 1k upvote badge. It be nice if i had a chance to earn one again. gives me something to strive for.

I think that transplantation of the community would be easier if some badges would be implemented. Even though on Derpy my only badge was 1st of April badge because I almost exclusively lurked, I still think it is a good idea

More important than badges is making badge application not garbage. Last I heard, it was still fully manual, and having no badges for now is an opportunity to rewrite that.

@Anonymous #B7CA
That can be solved by ordering badges by importance instead of manually slash by time of addition.

It’d also be nice if one didn’t need to pester the mods to get one removed from themselves. I understand why Derpi didn’t have that due to the Scroll of D4vid and Mallard, but unless Zizzy’s gonna repeat the mistakes of the past, i don’t see why not here.

Philomena already have that. There’s “high-priority” badges that appear before the rest, and “normal priority” badges.
