Instead of a trillion years of meaningless existence we get maybe 10 or 12 years of meaningless nonexistence in some TV show or video game.

More and more I see people that used to have common sense from that site dive head first into being pure mob mentality. It is like they just deiced to join the mob so they are not a target of, or now that it is more acceptable just take the mask off and damned lynching of people they hate. Seeing users berate people in the same manner that they had been is the most clear form of two-faced cowardice. They do not stand for anything other then their own skin. Although this should come as a surprise having a furry avatar and all. They act like they are your friend for decades until it is more opportunistic to stab you in the back.

I actually had that discussion with someone yesterday. In 2012 when I first fell in love with the fandom that only lasted till like early 2014. Then it petered out. Then in 2017 I got back into it. Now, I can tell how it’s changed, and I can tell its flaws, but I love it more than ever.  
Yeah ik this is cringy and all, but this show and the people I’ve met through it have been in my life for so long that they’ve shaped it quite a bit.  
And tbh, I like the smaller, more chill fandom more. It’s cozier. Well, as long as you remember to exclude Twitter faggots.

Nah. It’s not cringy to say that a social group you’ve spent a decade (or close to it) in has had a major impact on your life. I mean if you’re one of the younger fans then that’s half your life. And if you’re one of the older fans, it’s generally about third.
 
And Twitterfags aren’t people so they definitionally can’t be fans anyway.

I can relate to that. 2012-2014 was my initial infatuation, when I had a lot of delusions about the fandom. Then I sort of gradually backgrounded MLP. As the end of the show approached, I realised that despite the declining quality of the show, I permanently need pony, and that it would take effort from me to get it. And then anything more realistic was discredited by everything occuring 2020-present. So I’m more into MLP now than ever before, but it doesn’t feel effortless like it did in the beginning.

Funnily enough, enjoying the show got easier for me with time. I struggled hard to stop cringing at the puns, and the earlier seasons don’t hold up quite as well when I go back to watch them.  
Later seasons have flaws, but they never bothered me on my first watch.  
Then again, past the first season I stopped putting super high expectations on the show, instead thinking of it as a canvas for fanfiction to expand on. So that’s why I liked them expanding the universe without going in depth, because I really like the universe. Part of why I’m such a big EaW fag nowadays, despite almost never having the time to play it.  
Man, I used to read so much fanfiction in 2013-2015, I wish I had the time to do so again. Back then I would stay up late at night reading, read on the way to school, then read during class. I read the entirety of Project Horizons during the month off we got to prepare for our finals.  
Those are the times I miss, and they’ve got nothing to do with the fandom itself, just life moving on.

It’s the complete opposite for me. I have always loved the puns, and as I rewatch I become more and more of a season-one-fag. And I feel like the early seasons did a better job of “expanding the universe without going in depth”.

Never thought the stratospheric expectations some people had were healthy. I mean you shouldn’t have none but you should also remember what you’re watching. For me it was always just a cute, fun show that made me smile. And served as a great fanfiction canvas, as you said.

I remember when someone introduced me to poners back in 2012, when the wedding episode was the shit, that alicorn Twi controversy, Starlight’s overpowerness, AJ’s parents, etc. Although I just stopped watching till the 8th season due to interest (except the Kirin episode), someday I’ll finish the 2 remaining seasons.
 
MLP still makes me happy and I met cool individuals who not only share love of the series but with other interest in music, art, games, etc.

Funnily enough, the kirin episode is one of the big reasons I love the later seasons. It singlehandedly spurred me to have such a drastic change of mindset that eventually led to me managing to crawl outta depression.
