So long as people in the metropolitan centres continue to indulge themselves in the trappings of city life, that’s
never going to happen.
Big Cities have an inherently vampiric relationship with the rest of their state, hoovering up all the resources and value of their adjoining jurisdictions only to shit it all back out in waste of such magnitude that nature cannot possibly hope to break it down naturally like it used to for millennia.
Every time there’s a big infrastructure project that could have a hundred fold return on investment, it’s always within the cities, never anywhere else. They spend an unfathomable amount of time trying to make those soul-rending concrete jungles as enticing as possible while telling the entire rest of the state that they’re backwards, racist bogans (hillbillies for Americans) and to go fuck themselves.
But by far the worst part of them are the people and the culture fermented in these places. All the wealth sucked dry from the rest of the state is used by political candidates to bribe city-dwellers into thinking that living their lives in concrete sardine tins is great actually, and they’re the best for having “made it” in a place like this.
Even as their ability to move freely is restricted ever so tightly each year, everyone’s a disposable drone, those you should be able to trust for protection view you as an annoyance at best and an enemy at worst, the cost of living becomes ever more unsustainable and the people responsible for all this nonsense could just be voted out and/or fired if they really wanted to, but they don’t because those people give the peasants their easy access to resources they haven’t earned and stroke their ego telling them that they’re so stunning and brave for crying over Starbucks being racist or that we need socialism because they don’t have fun at work.
And all it cost them was the destitution and ruination of the lives and livelihoods of their fellow countrymen, who worked hard to grow the food that they ravenously devour and could make better use of the local resources that they so ruthlessly pillage. Who cares, they where just a bunch of white men in the boonies. I bet they didn’t even have a liberal arts degree. Fuck them.
Until that mindset is dropped, people are never going to wake up and realise that. And they never will, because the reality is that it’s easier for people to just hoover up the most resources that they are afforded to consume for the lowest exertion of effort possible. So as long as politicians can keep up the banal ease of city life and waste people’s time with ideological nonsense issues then all they have to do is let the rest of their state suffer the consequences of an unsustainable lifestyle, content in knowing the sheer amount of numbers in the city can outvote any attempt at reform, and they’re set.
