I have no idea. Or why the conscripts would default to using their rifles instead of their sidearms in the first place, but that’s what the numbers said they were doing.

Also apple trees don’t pass all their genes on to their seeds so you can grow wildly different cultivars by planting seeds from a single fruit because each seed might have been the result of pollen from a different tree. Often non-edible cultivars of apples are used to produce pollen, so the seeds from the fruit will produce non-edible fruit. Commercially grown apple trees are most often clones of other successful trees grown from cuttings, not seeds.
