I mean I always figured it was a trick. You slowly but continuously cut a single stroke while moving the apples until you have an equal number of equal pieces for three people.
I guess it’s about cutting both apples into one third and one two-thirds pieces in one knife-stroke, unless equal volumes of apple for each filly isn’t necessary. How you accurately determine where to cut to achieve exact volume (or mass) equality is a rather more difficult question due to the shape of the apples and the layout of the cores being obscured from being inside the apples.
