Not everyone who’s drawn to FoE likes it because of that. I personally really enjoy it because of the world, of the idea of magic and technology being extremely well integrated with each other. Most people I talk to that like it also don’t really talk about the juxtaposition that much.
Plus I’m a self-admitted edgelord, I love grimdark stuff regardless of if it’s mlp or not (though again, I really like the mlp universe in general). I love reading shit that makes me feel bad at first, then glad when I think back to how good my life is in comparison tho I guess I moderate a horse booru on the internet for free, so I guess I’m not exactly living the high life
Funnily enough, I kinda regret setting my fic in the FoE universe, simply because any post-apocalyptic world would have worked, and I’m not really using the existing lore or building on it.
I understand that some fanfic writers are driven by a phenomenon we used to call the Imp of the Perverse. We like to combine opposites. We like to drop familiar characters into unfamiliar situations. That can mean taking the poor, miserable, screwed-up cast of, say, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and dropping them into a sitcom. That can mean taking a cheerful escapist setting and pissing grimderp all over it. That’s what FO:E is.
I myself will admit to having written grimderp greentext shitposts for /mlp/. I won’t claim that anything I write when I get into that kind of mood is the Best Thing Evar or even worthy of view.
