There’s isn’t an specific translation of this tradition of new year’s eve. And in this case, monos is meant as in figures made out of old clothes or paper-maché.
Basically is a chilean old tradition that you build this “monos” out of old clothes that don’t use or make interesting characters based on tv shows, games, movies, etc. The main goal is to burn it to say goodbye to the old year and it’s negative vibes, and welcome a new year.
Here one that says “goodbye old year and happy new year 2018”:
When the clock reaches 0:00 of January 1st, you burn this figures to the ground.
