Barley was quite the surprise to his parents when they found out their son was a pegasus, and ohhhh boy, it wasn’t easy. Every day as a foal he would beg his parents to teach him how to fly, but only a sad smile and a, “maybe when you’re older” was the only reply he’d ever gotten. In reality, AJ and Rarity had no idea what they were doing. They were clueless what to do with their feathered son and the needs of being a pegasus (lol preening what’s that??). Raising Barley was hectic, so they eventually turned to Rainbow and Flutters. The two, through many sessions, eventually taught Barley to fly and gave rather… helpful tips for AJ and Rarity. The rest of Barley’s childhood was still really tough for them, but they got through it.  
But ever since foalhood Barley had a lot of trouble socially, he had never exactly hit it off with other ponies. At school he never really connected with anyone. Of course, with Rarity being the powerhouse supporter she is, power-boasted her son’s confidence every day. Her support to try to help him gain confidence and glamour kindaaa backfired, as through his teenage years his ego got to him. When Barley found this new confidence, with no experience of making many friends, he turned to only way of getting attention he knew. Negative attention. He would blatantly be annoying and cause a commotion to gain the “attention” of those he wanted to befriend. Most people view him as a annoying, no one really takes him seriously.  
He works part time as a mailstallion and even lifeguard time to time, anything to get away from working on the farm, much to Applejack’s discontent. He thinks his a real womanizer, and in his free time he struts around pathetically trying (and failing) to pick up mares.  
Other Facts: -He’s super short, if he was human he would be like, 5’0 -Really dislikes flying -His annoying and bratty behavior is just a defense mechanism he uses to compensate for the disconnection he feels with other ponies (͡°͜ʖ͡°)
