Description

“Ya hungry, Lucks?”

Flurry rummaged through the palace kitchens, pulling more and more boxes and packets from the depths, shooing away dutiful servents trying to assist the princess in her search as she lifted herself onto the counter to reach further into the cupboards.

“We got oat crackers, chocolates, apple chips - or maybe some juice?”

“Juice.”

“Yea? Comin’ right up!” Flurry’s horn lit up, and within a second she lifted a small carton of juice down to Lucky, who grasped it eagerly.

“Thank you,” Lucky murmered.

“Happy to help!” Flurry beamed, pulling herself down from the counter, pushing aside the clutter she’d brought down.

“Now, why don’t we get back to playing, huh?”

Lucky nodded, and followed Flurry as she led her out of the kitchen, leaving disgruntled kitchen staff to clean up the mess they’d left behind.

“Whaddya think we try princesses next? i know that we’re like, actually princesses, but like… we can play with some of my dolls I had! I’ve got the full set, you’ll love it!!”

Lucky swallowed a mouthful of juice, shaking her head.

“No? Well then what do ya wanna do missus?”

“astrometry!”

Flurry blinked “…Ast-o…what?”

“Astrometry.”

“What’s that?”

“It’s the precise measurement of the position and change of position of celestial bodies!”

“….Oh. Um, okay! How do we play that?”

“We observe their positions by pointing our optical telescope towards the sky, and record the light wavelengths that are visible from moving celestial bodies as well as their coordinates.”

“telescope…. celest….. OH!! you want to STARGAZE?”

Lucky nodded. Flurry beamed, proud of herself for figuring it out.

“Yea we can do that!! It’s not night time yet though, so we’d have to wait - but like, I know some good spells that might just do the trick anyway! and we could make smores and have a camp out - whaddya think, sound fun?”

Lucky nodded.

“Great! Let’s go gather some blankets, and a - like, telepho- telescope? right? I’m sure mom’s got one somewhere. Oh! maybe if we look in the library~~”

“Flurry dearest!!!”

A cheerful, sing song voice called out down the hallway. The princesses stop, ears pricked up.

“Flurry dear!! Meemaw is here!!”

Flurry groaned. Did she really have to show up now?

The pair turned around, and sure enough, an older, greying mare was making her way down the corridor, a chipper smile on her face.

“There you are, I’ve been looking all over for you!” Velvet chuckled. “How’s my favourite grandaughter, hmm?”

“We’re just fine, thank you.”

Velvet’s eyes drifted down, seemingly only just registering there was another pony in the room. Lucky didn’t meet her grandmothers gaze, instead focusing more on the juice box in her hooves.

Something flashed in Velvet’s eyes, but within a minute it was gone again, and she returned her gaze to Flurry.

“Right, well… I’m in the crystal empire for the rest of the day, perhaps you’d like to go shopping with your deal ol grandma?”

“Sorry, Granny, but me ‘n’ Lucky were gonna go star gazing.”

“Star gazing? in the middle of the day?” Velvet chuckled “Don’t be silly, Flurry.”

“I’m not being silly. It’s what Lucky wants to do, right, Lucks?”

Lucky didn’t respond, keeping her eyes on her juice box. Velvet snorted.

“Oh dear, Flurry, you don’t need to entertain her,” Velvet leaned forward, placing her hoof under Flurry’s chin, a warm smile on her face, “You’re an adult now, you don’t have to play with… babies.”

Flurry pulled her head away.

“Well, I want to. I like Lucks.”

Velvet’s smile fell, replacing itself with a sour frown.

“Hm.” She leaned down, bringing herself down to Lucky’s eye level. Lucky still didnt look directly at her.

“Hello, Lucky Wish. Where are your…. mothers?”

Lucky didn’t respond.

“Perhaps you’d like to go spend time with them, and let Flurry here spend time with dear ol grandma?”

Lucky still said nothing. She shifted on her hooves, looking away to the side.

“Come now, didn’t they teach you any manners? I am talking to you, Lucky Wish. Look at me!”

“Granny, stop, for real.” Flurry stepped in, pulling a discomforted Lucky away from her grandmother “That’s not nice.”

“I just asked her a question… Although, mind you, I don’t know what I expect, considering the ponies that raised her,” Velvet chuckled, pulling herself back up to Flurry’s height. “Probably doesnt have a polite bone in her body.”

“I like Auntie Twili.”

“Oh, I’m sure you do, dear, I’m sure you do,” Velvet cooed, “You were always very sweet and trusting. That’s my dear.”

“You don’t need to, like… treat me like I’m stupid, granny.”

“Oh goodness no, I’m not, dear! You’re a grown up now, sweetheart. I just want you to act like one is all.”

“Well. Okay. And well…. as a like, adult n stuff, I want to play with Lucky today. Okay?”

“….Flurry, I came all this way~~”

“So did Lucky.”

Velvet scoffed indignantly “Goodness, Flurry, I’m an old mare, the trip isn’t so easy for me. Please don’t be difficult about this.”

I’m not. I want to spend the day with Lucky. You can join us if you want.”

Velvet’s eyes darted to the (now seemingly unbothered) foal on the floor, and then back up to Flurry. She opened her mouth to speak, but was cut off.

“I mean, like, Lucky is your grandaughter too? and we’re both princesses? Why don’t you want to spend time with her too?”

“Flurry, dear… It’s complicated, adult things~~”

“Then explain it to me.”

“I…” Velvet cleared her throat, “That side of the family made their choice. If they want to follow that ~~ that lifestyle, then that’s on them, and we should leave them to their business. We don’t have to assosciate with them - especially a bright, sweet, young girl such as yourse~~”

“What exactly has Lucky ever done to you?!”

“Don’t raise your voice at me young lady!” Velvet chided, “Lucky’s… mother….-s, have made a decision, and she is a product of it. If they want to live that kind of life, they have to live with the consequences.”

“No, granny, it’s YOU who’s made a decision. Auntie Twili is really nice, and so is Auntie Dashie, too. And like they’re really good moms? I’d be so proud of myself if I could manage to be anything like them. I love them? And I don’t understand what’s stopping you?”

“Flurry, I… I have done so much for you, I helped to raise you, I changed your diapers ~~ The least you could do for me, right now, is go shopping with me in the city, rather than stand here arguing with me all day.”

“Yea, but where was all that affection for Lucks? Or Birdie or Summs?”

“They’re different~~”

“No, Granny, they’re not.” Flurry stepped forward, trembling slightly. “A-and, well… If you can’t realise that, I don’t want any more of it.”

“Excuse me?”

Flurry unfolded her wings, taking a deep breath in and pushing out her chest.

“As… Princess of the Crystal Heart, and the future Empress of the Crystal Empire, I hereby give the royal decree that… you are now forbidden to visit the crystal palace, or request an audience with me, the princess, until you fix things with Auntie Twili.”

Velvet stared “….Flurry, I don’t think you understand how royal decrees work.”

“Well, I mean it!” Flurry blushed, “I don’t want to see you! Not until you talk to Auntie Twili! It’s not fair.”

“Flurry, you can not~~”

“I can do what I want!” Flurry stomped, causing Lucky to flinch. She winced, and looked down at her cousin. “…And right now, I want to go play with Lucky.”

The pair turned their back on Velvet, leaving the old mare shocked and appalled, struggling to find the right thing to say.

“Flurry Heart! I am you grandmother! You get back here, and apologise, right this instant! I won’t… I won’t let your own stupidity prevent me from seeing my own grandaughter in my old age! Where’s your sympathy? Where’s your respect for your elders? I honestly can’t believe you~~”

“Now, where were we, Lucky?”

Flurry looked down at her cousin, ignoring the angry shouts and callings of her grandmother down the hall.

“Astrometry.”

“Right, that’s right! Let’s go find you a telephone.”

“Telescope.”

“That’s the thing.”

i ion. i ion even got shit to say bro.

flurry is ditzy and maybe not all that good with the science stuff lucky likes, but she isn’t blind to what her grandmother does, especially as she gets older. She gathers, both from her dad, from twilight, and from even Velvet herself, that her grandma rejects everything to do with twilight and her kids… and as soon as flurry realises the injustices of it, well. she isnt afraid to speak up.

or well, okay, she’s afraid, and doesnt really know how to, but she’s gonna do it anyway.

i honest to god cannot count the amount of times ppl requested this so here you go. it doesnt feel. like. up to the standard that i want it in terms of the writing, esp as something that ppl rlly wanted to see…. but instead of spending ages trying to rewrite it and feeling shit about myself im just going to recognise the flaws, aim to do better, and like just appreciate this for what it is. and. uh. yea. this already took a good chunk of time to draw and write.
