When selecting a new queen, changelings have a special nursery where a handful of potential queens are fed a “special jelly” to help them grow stronger than the other changelings. Then, when the potential queens reach a certain age, they engage in a fight to the death and the winner is crowned the Queen of all changelings.
 
In general, changelings have a very brutish, everyone-for-themselves culture. They are not meant to love each other or even their young, or work towards any individual aspirations. They’re meant to just fit into the existing power structure, work for the Queen, and raise their young to do the same. Plus, Chrysalis herself is pretty prideful and power-hungry even by changeling queen standards, with a very traditional mindset on how changelings should act. This is why she hates Thorax and his kingdom, who, in her eyes, basically abandoned their entire species and turned into ponies.
 
Here, you can see the young, newly-crowned Queen Chrysalis standing on the bodies of her defeated opponents, proudly taking on the title she earned and getting drunk on power. This is the start of a glorious reign, one that will bring untold power and prosperity to all of changeling-kind.
 
Or so she thinks.
