(Cadence Mercedes)
~My God, my heart beats faster! And my mind is racing Could it be…?
Could it be that you’ve come back to life?
I know those eyes, following me
Dark and familiar, and deep as the sea
I know that face, strange though it seems
Younger and kinder, it haunts all my dreams
How can you stand there, a whisper from me?
Yet somehow, be so far away?
In eyes once familiar, a stranger
I see With so many words left to say
(The Count)
This man is dead, he is no more
He died a little each day Like a thief, the Château d’If has stolen him away
The mind plays tricks
You are confused
The man you seek is long gone Dead and cold
A story told, by those he trusted, those he loved, and those who then..
“Moved on.”
(“The Count/Mercedes)
I am a ghost, just a mirage
(There in that voice…)
Who chases traces of you
(Traces of you)
(Dark and familiar, and deep as the sea)
This man is dead, he is no more
(I know those eyes…)
And though it’s torturing me
(Torturing me)
(Both)
Can either of us really ever be free?
How can you stand there a whisper from me…?
When you are still so far away?
And why does the truth seem too hard to be true?
With so much broken…
I think the pic speaks for itself, but i’ll explain anyway:
This is the point in the story in which Shining Dantes has moved to Paris, and introduced himself as “The Count of Monte Cristo”. His years in prison dulled his fur’s color, as did the desolation of his hope, and love. Now he’s a bitter, and angry stallion hiding behind the mask of sophistication. The 3 betrayers were also invited so that he could decide what to do. To his delight, NOONE recognized him as he was.
Noone except Mercedes, of course.
She’s known him for too long, and she loves him even to this day - despite marrying Sombra 8 years ago. Though his appearance is different, it’s his eyes that give him away. She knows those eyes all too well, and she just can’t believe it’s him. Yet she notes just how different they are. The warmth, andhappiness is gone. And in its place is something she knows nothing of.
Naturally, he denies it, because he is still resentful of her for marrying Sombra - his own best friend who had sent him to the Chateau D’if in the first place, and seemingly forgetting him, and moving on as all others did. Or at least, that’s what he assumed. But when she comes to him with familiarity, his vengeful resolve towards her weakens. And despite his attempts to keep her at a distance fail, and they end up dancing together as they sing to each other. In both their eyes, you can see that they still have a longing for each other. Though in The Count’s eyes, there IS a spark of anger. But it’s a conflicted one, since he was so sure he could easily move on from her, and make her pay like the others. But he’s found it just isn’t so.
Even after all these years, he still loves her.
