After the failures of the Royal Guards, the newly crowned Empress Twilight Sparkle ordered them disbanded and established a new cadre of personal guards that formed the core of what would eventually become the Dragoons, a knightly order of pegasi who rode dragons into battle.
 
Those ancient soldiers, while brave and adept, bore little resemblance to the breed of super-soldier that appeared towards the end of the war. Covered from head to hoof in a powered Dragoon Exosuit enchanted by the Empress herself, possessed of augmentations both genetic and cybernetic, the modern Dragoons are modified in utero and raised from birth into a lifetime of service as part of an ascetic warrior caste.
