Description:

“A conceptual MLP anthro-drawing of Heroine of Equestria and her Royal Guard, as a (late) birthday gift to James aka DungeonBrony. A kind and good person with genuine heart, he has become a member of DA community for sometime and has given me plenty of advise and feedback, to which I really appreciate. I hope that this humble gift would show my gratitude in return :).

DRAWING COMMENTARIES

It is said that one of artist’s biggest challenge is to draw something which he/she isn’t used to, and this drawing is one of the most challenging I have made, yet the result is very rewarding indeed. James is member of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Fandom, to which he refer himself as brony. While that gave a hint of where his interest lies, the fandom itself is an uncharted territory for my skills. I rarely draw fan-art, let alone one with MLP but that’s where the challenge came from.

Since I’ve been drawing a lot of Women Warriors, I wanted to see if that can be put into use. James plays Dungeon & Dragon in his spare time, so I thought that the fantasy element from the game could be molded into MLP, which resulted in a very “Anthropomorphic image” of MLP character, which in this case, an Alicorn. I tried to preserve at least a bit of that with the facial feature, hoof-hand, legs and the mane, while the rest looks pretty much like human. Alicorn, as from what I have observed, is generally taller than the rest of MLP characters, hence her tall stature. The mane and face were inspired by the three of the main characters in MLP, Princess Celestia, Twilight Sparkle, and Rarity, so you can say that this Heroine of Equestria is an OC, or just a generic anthro alicorn. The armors are based on that which are used by the Equestria Royal Guard, which features metal-cuirass and segmented hips armor. The only association of D&D i could think of would be the d20 (Twenty Sided Dice) on the royal guard’s pauldron, which I incorporated based on Jame’s MLP character cutie-mark.

All in all, the whole process was a combination of a lot of incorporation and stylization, while trying to stick to the original representation of MLP characters. The technique itself isn’t something new, many historical art artists use this to depict historical characters based on what artifact or description left by the said culture/era. With a little bit of creativity and Imagination, it often wonders me how far our art can go :)
