I’ve had a lot of headcanons for pegasi. So here’s one for unicorns!
 
Their horns CAN grow back after they are broken. They just seem way to important to not. Plus if I remember correctly, Rarity has had her horn filed before. So I assume that horns are kinda like nails (they grow and need to be maintained). However, when they do break their horns, their ability to use spells is rather weak or non-existent depending on how strong of a unicorn they are. And upon breaking their horn, they get all loopy or woozy for a while as they are adjusting to the lack of magic.
 
So here’s a woozy baby Dove staring at the floor with momma Trixie trying to make her feel better. How she breaks her horn and whether or not she did it on purpose is unknown.
 

 
Trixie: How is my little Dove the Extraordinary feeling? Less dizzy?
 
Dove: Mmhm zoning out on floor
 
Trixie: …………. what are you looking at?
 
Dove: starts swaying from side to side T-the… moving….. le plancher. I ocan like I’m on the feel…..
 
Trixie: Aw, poor thing
 
Dove: falls over on Trixie
 
Trixie: Uh oh giggles
 
Dove: mumbles Can I……. dormir? Go to…to…. dormir?
 
Trixie: picks up Dove and takes her to bed
