Description

My first cartoon of 2017 was one of My Little Pony’s Starlight Glimmer receiving a Fukubukuro (happy grab bag) present from a young fan here in Honolulu. Now it’s The Great and Powerful Trixie’s turn, as she opens her bag to pull out a large plushie of herself and a do-it-yourself Princess Twilight Sparkle voodoo kit (pins included). Miss Lulamoon is very happy with this grab bag!

Hello, Princess by Centurion1337
: I actually use the Twilight doll as a pin cushion when sewing my costumes. In her presence. I tell her it’s an acupuncture doll. Heh heh heh…

Fukubukuro is a New Year’s Day tradition in Japan in which retailers fill mystery grab bags with premium merchandise and sell them for at least half of their original price. It’s become popular in Hawaii because of the large amount of Japanese tourists who shop at the big Ala Moana Center shopping mall in Honolulu. Hawaii also has a large ethnic Japanese population going back to the old plantation days of the late 1800’s.

And my attitude toward Trixie changed significantly after watching the TV episode “No Second Prances”. She is so outrageous and self-absorbed it’s hilarious, and it hides her immense insecurity. And when she lost and regained her new friendship with Starlight Glimmer, I just fell in love with the bumbling narcissist.

Drawn at Comic Jam Hawaii at Pearlridge Center in Aiea, Hawaii on January 8, 2017.
