An alternative flag representing the lesbian community. The labrys is an ancient greek double-headed axe used by the Amazons, which has been adopted by feminists as a symbol of women empowerment. The inverted black triangle represents how Nazis would label captured lesbians as “asocial” using this symbol. The rest of the flag is violet because of Sappho’s poetry, which is an important piece of lesbian history. The flag hasn’t been widely used due to the fact that it was made by a gay man and not a lesbian. Another reason it hasn’t been used is because transphobic camps have tried to claim the labrys as a symbol for their campaigns. However, the original flag was never grounded in transphobia. Others decide to not use this flag because of the black triangle and its meaning in history.
