Original Description:

Spike the dragon is a special breed of dragon. Although initially hatched as a normal dragon egg, when hatched with the power of intense unicorn magic, Spike hatched with features not seen in dragons at the time.

As not many folks had seen a dragon in the flesh and scales before, Spike was taken as the genuine article. Without a comparison people simply thought that dragons had progressed in a way much different than history books would have had them believe. Although there were scales, there were feathers! Although there were initially pointed snouts, there were beaks! Who knew?

Not until the main six, and in turn all of Ponyville, encountered a matured dragon had ponies began to see differences in Spike’s physiology. He was definitely different alright, and to say that Spike wasn’t effected would be a bold faced lie. With Twilight studying him more strictly after this incident, and his friends being a little curious themselves, this was the seed that first started his own insecurities and curiosity.

As Spike would come to know dragons, he wouldn’t be able to find answers. There weren’t many if any like him. He was a bird, but he was a dragon, but he was a pony? Something seemed different. That was until Celestia calmed his thoughts on the topic. Coming to a conclusion that there weren’t dragons like him. Twilight was the only pony able to hatch a dragon with pure magical energy. It was the very reason he was able to use transportation magic. It was the reason his wings came in late. It was the reason he was truly one of a kind.
