You tell Moonflower that the Equestrian Voyagers Agency sounds like the perfect opportunity for your next adventure, and ask her if she would like to come with you to Ponyville and check it out together.
Moonflower: “Yuh uh! Jus’ lemme grab my stuff.”
You put away the dishes as the bat pony trots around the house and gathers her belongings. Then, you open the door, and step out into a cool gentle breeze.
The grass outside sparkles with morning dew under the early sunshine, and the air carries the refreshing smells of ripe apples and fallen leaves. Up above, fluffy white clouds drift along the bright blue sky, announcing a fair, pleasant day.
Unable to fly straight north due to the Everfree Forest’s unpredictable winds — a warning you’ve heard countless times from the local pegasi —, you suggest going around the eastern side instead. It may be a slightly longer detour, but you are curious to see how the reconstruction of Starfalls Town has progressed since you last visited.
Moonflower: “Right behind ya!”
With a kick of your legs and a flap of your wings, you push yourself off the ground, and up into the open air. You grin, proud of how far you’ve come; a few weeks earlier, the mere sight of the grass shrinking below your hooves made your body seize up and quickly land again. Leaf Chaser’s lessons truly gave you the confidence you needed, her flattering sketches besides.
You soar far above the calm waters of Mare’s Tail Lake, then glide over the golden crops of Sungrain Fields, your shadow never trailing far behind.
Flying next to your bat pony friend, you can’t help but notice how different your techniques are: for one, you flap your wings much slower, and glide for much longer than she does. For another, while you can go slightly faster on the descent, you cannot turn nearly as sharply — a useful skill for a cave flyer to have, no doubt.
But most of all, unlike Moonflower, you have neither the hearing nor the confidence to fly with your eyes closed, no matter how much the stinging cold and the blinding sun make you wish you did.
Fortunately, you arrive at Starfalls within a couple of minutes, and land on the edge of the quiet town. The construction has paused with the coming of daytime, but seems to be coming along nicely.
Over half of the tents have since been replaced with humble stone houses built halfway into the ground. Next to the water well in the centre of town, a new longhouse was added to offer a place to stay for visitors — which, at the moment, amount to the resting helpers from neighbouring settlements.
In the distance, a few apple trees form a small yet bountiful orchard. You remember hearing that the trees were generously donated to the bat ponies by Autumn Gold after their remarkable popularity during the festival.
Seeing the new town come together brings a smile to your face. You ask Moonflower if she’ll also be getting a new house here.
Moonflower: “Nuh uh! You’re not gettin’ rid of me that easy. Heehee! But now you see how much closer things are when ya got wings. S’like we live next-door!”
You nod in agreement, and give your companion a quick feathered hug. You don’t dare take your alicorn body for granted just yet, but in the short time you’ve had it, it has certainly changed the way you perceive the world.
