You probably don’t want to dig your heels in too hard on Vaush’s opposition to cp…
In general it’s best to be careful letting any single ideology or spokesperson dominate your own outlook on life. Especially the political personalities, tend to be more hung up on being seen as being righteous within their own ideology, than actually being good people. Consider the amount of effort it takes to make all that content, and the kind of person it takes to put in that much effort for the adulation of their fans. To be blunt, most people who put so much effort into getting that kind of attention, tend to be narcissistic pricks when you meet them in real life. That’s why they try so hard to be admired after all. Doesn’t really matter if they are leftist or right wing.
But these positive qualities in the show itself have led to a very ugly turn of events in the Steven Universe fandom, after a beleaguered fanartist said she attempted suicide after being bullied by members of the fandom who felt her art was problematic. In a bizarre turn of events prompted by the ensuing debate over what kinds of fanart are acceptable, some fans have now turned even against the show’s creative team, including show creator Rebecca Sugar.
It all started last week when a fanartist going by the name Zamii caused a scare on Tumblr when she posted an apparent final note to her Tumblr, then disappeared for three days. When she re-emerged, it was to post a tearful video she claimed was being filmed at a hospital where she said she was getting the help she needed.
Prior to Zamii’s alarming initial farewell, members of the Steven Universe and Homestuck fandoms had reportedly created more than 40 critical blogs and other social media accounts directed at her because they believed she was purveying problematic depictions of many of the characters she drew. During her time in fandom, Zamii had been accused of a litany of flawed portrayals of characters, including perpetuating “racism/stereotyping, transmisogyny/transphobia, apologism, incest, pedophilia, fatphobia, and ableism” in her art. For example, when Zamii drew a Japanese character from the popular anime Yowamushi Pedal, she came under fire for giving the character yellow skin and slanted eyes; when she drew a black character, she came under fire for removing her Afro and giving her blonde hair; when she drew a “Native American Fluttershy” from My Little Pony, the response was mixed and often critical, pointing out that she had further stereotyped the character.
@Adán Druego
Wrong Vaush said modern child slave labor in sweatshops making the mainstream products you enjoy is little different than CP. Which makes sense to me, Im cutting off meat, meat is made by rape.
@Tacom4ster@Deserter
People seems to believe whenever someone dares to criticize a black depiction of a character, it means, “Whites Only”. I argue it means, “No Blacks”. It’s normal or political, meaning blacks and TQ+.
@Tacom4ster
Of course, as you’ve stated, this is Middle Eastern, thus normal.
@Tacom4ster
Vaush doesn’t like lolicons, but he argues that cp isn’t wrong under certain circumstances, doesn’t he?
@Amagan
Im not a liberal, Im an anarcho communist, but with duality of man, also having a bizarre kink that won’t be liked on the left, Im like an antihero, both left and right would hate me. I just ask we fight fascism first together before we squabble the small stuff
@Amagan
I was never really a fan of Harry Potter, like Hamilton and Parks & Recreations, Obama era liberal optimism is dead Also I explained Twilight is more Middle Eastern in this pic, you could have just said Orientalism.
Eh stop talking like the left is a monolith, there’s so much infighting. Like I’m a Vaushite, and despite the memes, Vaush is very much against Lolicon. Though I would try to have a good faith debate with him. I also watches Contrapoints… whenever she uploads, and she doesn’t like Vaush. I watch Black Youtubers like FD Signifier (Who doesn’t like Vaush) so I do intellectually understand more than you think
Right now Im mad at Jessie Gender a White Breadtuber teaming up with Foreign Man from a Foreign Land, a Black debate bro Youtuber both calling Shark3Zero the racial C Slur for not being a perfect leftist. So pfft Im just sexually messed up, but at least Im better than a Nazi. Also I miss Lindsay Ellis, which wokescolds like you bullied her off Youtube. So don’t act like all Leftists think the same
@Tacom4ster
I’ve seen for myself what that sort of “respect” would entail. I can say with certainty that I don’t want it.
I’ve been following the drama on twitter for years. And I know when people like you talk about respect, you’re not actually talking about genuine respect, but rather your own twisted and distorted interpretation of what the word means. People like you “respect” others only so long as they exercise ideological purity and adherence with groupthink.
People like you just loved and respecting JK Rowling, up until she spoke out against transgender people. Now she’s public enemy number one because Harry Potter promotes hate and transphobia.
People like you just love when characters are made black as midnight because it promotes diversity and inclusion. But if an artist dares to make a character’s skin tone even a shade lighter, they’re accused of whitewashing and black erasure and get sent death threats.
And then there’s you who not only put Twilight Sparkle in digital blackface, you went so far as to put her in an attire that screams sex slave because you thought it was hot. That just reeks of what liberals call black fetishism and the promotion of negative stereotypes that hurt the black community. Their words, not mine.
And since you said you’d have greater “respect” for a liberal raising these points than a conservative doing the same, the rules of association make those are your words as well. These are the rules of the game that people like you insisted upon, so you get to play by them as well.
@Tacom4ster
You don’t seem to get it.
Being white or straight isn’t political, attacking certain races and genders for political brownie points however IS a political position.
Art is no more inherently political than the artist makes it. The left like to say that all “art IS political”, while the truth is rather that “all can be made political”. There is a subtle difference, one position demands that all art must be made with a political message, the other says that the message can be put in anything, implying also, that art can be made without politics.
What I said was that race swapping is often used as a means of virtue signaling for a political cause, thus, using the art to make a political point. Hence, doing so can be easily mistaken for a political signal, regardless of the intent it is made with.
@Amagan
Remember that time Steven Universe fans tried to bully an artist into suicide because she drew a character with the “wrong skin color”? This kind of drama has been around for a while. Modern twitter drama over anime fanart isn’t that new…
@Anonymous #B5FC
Correct! Just like when the “muh diversity” got pissed about a Japanese manga not having a black character, despite her bodysuit suggesting she was a black girl. So they go and “fix” the art like they do, only to learn after the fact that they sought their precious “representation” with an UNDERAGED SEX SLAVE!
@Deserter
Most of the people who talk about race that I have met, tend to see that the other way around. That’s the kind of people that keep demanding race swaps, usually.
Amagan was probably just worried that this pic was an example of that. God knows, you don’t have to look far to find pics where artists race swap because of “muh diversity” and to make a political point.
@Tacom4ster
I wouldn’t worry too much about it, it’s just aesthetics.
When it comes to fictional character design, their skin color isn’t much different from fur color in ponies, it’a just what looks better for you.
