Submitted for ’s week 32 theme: a blue pony. To be honest this submission is just about as unimaginative as you get next to drawing a picture of Rainbow Dash.
That said, after mulling it over all week, a sad pony and [link] were the best I could come up with in terms of ideas; neither particularly good.
On the art side of things though I’m fairly happy with this piece. Over this last week I got my hands on a proper set of drawing pencils. Up to this point I’ve been drawing exclusively with a set of plain 0.7mm mechanical pencils. Though I have a great deal of control with these, the fact of the matter is that having a proper set of pencils VASTLY improves my ability to produce specific tones in my drawing.
As such I’ve been fiddling with my old shading style (see [link] and [link] for examples). I can safely say that having access to varying hardness leads makes doing varying degrees of shadow much easier.
Also, something I’m noticing is that I’ve been doing a lot of my more recent drawings using the types of framing that I’m actually used to from my photography. I’m not sure if this is a good or a bad thing, given that I’m prone to odd angles and aggressive crops in my photographs, but all the same it’s proving to be an interesting variation from my previously sterile layouts.
