My submission for #MLP-ATG-Alumni’s Week 9 Challenge: ATHLETIC PONIES.

When I was younger I was a total Peanuts fan and this little sketch was the very first thing to come to my mind when I read “athletic ponies”. I can’t explain why, but I wasn’t going to complain.

That said there are a few things to note here. First is that a pony would have to kick with it’s front foot (or maybe it’s back foot way out to the side.) As such, it’s kinda hard to see them producing the Schultz classic “Aughhh” Whump panel set. This was as close as I could get in context.

Second, yes Charlie Brown is a blank flank. I kinda figured that it’d suit him as after 50 years of searching he never did find out what it was that truly made him special (despite searching as aggressively as any CMC member.)

Third I tried to mimic many of Schultz’s habits and patterns in the style, including action lines squiggles, and balloon shapes. That said, I think it was a clean wiff on everything but the background (which actually came out pretty close.)

Lastly, sorry for the small resolution. I have high res sketches for each panel except for Pinkie Pie herself as she was added when the joke was designed. But it’s already 20:11 local time and I needed to get finished up so I lowered the res to reduce the amount of space I’d have to color and shade.
