BIO:
Ornas Desert Sun, better known as just Desert Sun, was born on the outskirts of the Zercan sands in the small poor village of Ozka. He was raised as an only child by two parents.
As a child in school, he struggled to stay alert and engaged in lessons and tutoring. His mind easily wandered off when trying to focus and learn, and he had trouble remembering things he was taught. This led to his diagnosis of ADD.
Desert did have a childhood passion and obsession that he could remember though; the surrounding Zercan sands.
He had no trouble reading and remembering anything he learned about his home. It is said that he memorised the entire known history of Zerca before he was a teenager.
This fact is slightly more believable knowing that only one book on Zercan history was ever written.
He absolutely loved to learn about what lay beyond the walls of his village school, and what lay beyond the wire fence that comprised of the village border. Early on in his life, this is what he wanted to be. A historian. He wanted to be the man that discovered things, that got to collect and preserve artifacts and teach the world the things they don’t know about Zerca.
He collected stones and dried woods from the surrounding sands, which were nothing more than old discarded building materials in actuality, but in Desert’s mind these were ancient artifacts and items of historical significance.
He was a happy child for the first half of his school life, and is often said to make everyone laugh with his clever sense of humour. However towards the later stages of school Desert sadly grew pessimistic. The inability to enjoy classes were unfortunately bested by his peer’s mindsets, which were represented in his grades.
While Desert is a sociable person and doesn’t shy away from it, deep down he prefers a smaller crowd. It was this period of school time that formed this attitude.
Home life was average as well, though his parents sadly did not invest enough energy in his education/passion to assist with his growing pessimistic attitudes, neither did Desert want to share these thoughts with them or anyone else.
At the later half of school, Desert learned the truth about his home country. After reading the only book on Zercan history for the nth time, he discovered that no more documents of its history could be found. Not because he couldn’t source them, but because nobody seemed to care about writing more. Instead of being encouraged to be the man who made these new discoveries, his pessimism pushed him into weariness of his passions and they slowly dissipated.
Upon leaving school, Desert realised he had never thought exactly about who he wanted to be as a person. What his future should be, what he should do with himself, where he should work. It seemed his peers left for the bright lights of the inner cities and towns, but Desert stayed in Zerca despite the advice that there was nothing to be gained from staying.
He loved his home, and he could never leave it. It was a part of him, it was in his blood. He would never sleep again if he left.
With the idea of being a historian all he had, he left home at 16 to pursue that childhood dream.
Now he roams the desert, writing scripts, collecting artifacts and documenting his discoveries with little income. Relying on donations of food and water, his pessimism sadly grew to nihilism as he felt that the whole world didn’t really care about him nor the place he loved so much.
Later on than most, Desert Sun received his cutie mark: interestingly enough it was a pair of feathers. Considering his passion for his country this mark didn’t make much sense, but it provided him with excellent bird rearing skills. He seems to have a natural talent handling them, is excellent at understanding their mood and body language, and generally birds of all kind seem to favour him over others.
Perhaps Desert would be popular amongst griffins then?
Tangentially Desert owns a pet bird belonging to a native Zercan species: a large male tawny eagle named Tovii.
Tovii was rescued and adopted as an egg by Desert, and has remained loyally at his side as his companion ever since.
Tovii is characterised by his blue eyes, and a feather that permenantly sticks up on top of his head.
Tovii is a very excitable bird, and much more bouncy and upbeat than his rescuer, interestingly. Desert, thanks to his cutie mark, has taught him valuable tricks for life in the Zercan sands, such as message relaying like a carrier pigeon, and the ability to hold objects for Desert when needed. (such as torches in caves)
You could argue he’s more like a dog than an eagle, loving fuss and attention from anybody he’s spent more than five minutes with, but he only listens to Desert’s voice. This can lead to amusing altercations with anybody who may fear a giant squawking bird with essentially knives for toes, but he really just wants attention.
He is very clingy too; while his messenger training has somewhat helped, prolonged time without Desert can cause Tovii to become distressed and cry, pulling feathers out and generally being noisy and unsettled.
