As much as I love this season finale, you can really feel the writers stretching to justify this whole climactic set piece. Or at least I can really feel it because I’m now trying to do the same thing but my way.

Transcript:

Princess Luna: When Discord and Tirek storm Canterlot looking for us, we must not have what they’re looking for.
Princess Celestia: If we were to run, Discord would simply track us down. But they might not know about you and Cadance yet. And between the two of you, you are the more capable wizard.
Twilight Sparkle: Well… Discord might know, actually…
Princess Celestia: Tirek is the more dire threat now. He planned for war against myself and Luna, but he has no idea what you’re capable of. And I strongly suspect Discord will only tell him the absolute minimum to maintain some measure of control over him. In this situation, any advantage we can take is one we must use. That’s why, to prevent Tirek from growing too powerful for even the Elements of Harmony to confront, we’ve agreed on this backup plan. Before Tirek arrives to steal our magic from us, the three of us will remove it and give it all to you.
Twilight Sparkle: *<GASP!>* This is a terrible idea.
