Continuing the topic of my untitled comic, which I evolved into a full-fledged fantasy MLP-unrelated project, I, surprisingly, still have a reference for the full cast of characters that were supposed to be featured in this project, lined up (actual height reference). I remember in the old days I made such character sheets for the web-comic based on “The Count of Monte Rainbow” from the Ink Potts fandom. It’s funny. Seems like some things never change. I’ll post more detailed character information sheets a little later, but for now, we can talk about character designs.
 
While the untitled comic was still a work in progress, I wanted to fully and in detail approach the theme of the time period when King Sombra ruled the Crystal Empire. Plus, to stay as much faithful to the source material in the form of the Friendship is Magic series, which meant: if the pony is not important enough in status, then I can draw a minimum of clothes for them (not counting the armor). All designs have been individually crafted with deep thought for each character based on their personal history and how their presence affects the Crystal Empire and vice versa. Even King Sombra didn’t escape a little redesign from me to differentiate him from canon because in comic’s canon he ruled the Empire long enough to change visually (before he was overthrown by Celestia and Luna). All characters that are connected to the King in some way, whether by oath of service or being members of his royal council (will be explained later), have tiny or prominent red colors in their designs.
 
To this day I’m most pleased with the overall design and color palette of Calla, who, by the way, appeared in the released pages of the untitled comic.
