Some headcanon about Chrysalis.
 
In a past changeling headcanon I talked about, how a hive has a below the radar live style. They don’t prey for a long time on the same creatures, so they don’t draw attention to the hive. However, Chrysalis was over ambitious and thought she was powerful enough to take over Equestria, a great, but dangerous source of magic. She thought she could do it, after defeating her mother, the previous hive queen. Normally the princesses leave the hive after reaching a certain age to form a new one for themselves. But Chrysalis didn’t want to start from zero. Her mother was the queen of the biggest changeling hive, and she wanted that. The ego of her victory led to her demise later.

Does that mean the changelings are not even “hers”?  
They are. Most of the original changelings of the hive died. Changelings have a long life span, thought drones doesn’t have as long as queens. Chrysalis’ mother was really old. Some eldery changeling left, who still remember the original queen.
 
Does that mean there are other hives too?  
Yep, but probably on the other side of the planet. Some of them may actually be Chrysalis’ “sisters”. They probably never gonna get into contact with Equestria ever, too much of a risk. Some of them may actually metamorphed too.
 
Why ‘that day’ she decided to take over the hive?  
It was her day to leave and form her own. Plus they had an argument, because she constantly wanted to make her mother take over Equestria for its magic.
 
Did she kill her?  
Yes. Draining a changeling fully out of magic kills them. That’s what she wanted to do to Thorax too.
 
What is Chrysalis’ mother’s name?  
Currently I call her ‘Gyne’, but it’s not important.
