You can blame that on the fanfic writers who replaced the real writers. Spike was supposed to just be a terrestrial dragon but the pukes who came later couldn’t wrap their heads around the idea that there could be different species of dragons so now they all have wings who turn into anthros when they grow up.

I’m starting to think dragons actually are usually born with wings and Spike was just a really shitty dragon. Possibly as a result of his very unnatural hatching.
