Ask Movie Slate - Episode 245 - The Little Mermaid
Mmm? Movie? What movie?

Oh yeah! Er, “Little Mermaid” is alright. I had fun with it, I think. Not that I was paying much attention to it, of course, I had my hooves full of birb girlfriend.

But yeah sure, it’s alright, check it out if you haven’t already.

Today’s Movie Slate is brought to you thanks to Chelicera.

This background was an absolute nightmare to work on, but like most nightmares I find myself into I had an awful lot of fun work on it. Not even kidding, I absolutely loved working on this piece, and I think it was around this point I was trying to prove something to myself. I tried not to over-wash it with too much blue and metal tones (trying not to Spielberg it), which was rather difficult to hold back from, but I think the colour balance came out alright. You be the judge!

“The Little Mermaid” is often credited as the movie that brought Disney its renaissance in the late 80’s early 90’s, and for good reason. It is spectacular in it’s animation, scope, and the music and songs remain rather timeless and enjoyable to this day. That being said, I wasn’t as blown away by it as everyone else was. I will tell you this, I went to see this movie in the theatre when it first came out, and the only thing I remembered for years after having seen it was the ending fight scene with giant Ursula, and the “Poor Unfortunate Souls” song. Re-watching it recently there’s a few things I’ve grown to appreciate, like Ariel’s up-beat personality, Sebastian’s completely “done with everything in the world” personality, and how nuanced the character of Triton is (the real protagonist of the movie, the one with a character arc).

Anything that has harmed my opinion of this movie is stuff that came right after. “Rescuers Down Under” was spectacular, “Beauty and the Beast” is stellar, and “The Lion King” just blew my mind away, so after all those hits going back to the movie that started this streak of hits feels a bit backwards. I’ll give it credit as the trail blazer that it is, but I am not in love with it as many other are. It’s not overrated either, or underrated, it’s perfectly rated as it is.
