It wasn’t that. It was a mutation in the hive’s core genetics. What you described is their adaptive biology. The aliens that result from infecting different hosts still recognize each other because they’re adding host traits to the same superhive’s dna. What changed is the underlying alien genetic blueprint.
… that doesn’t make sense. Genetic drift is the core of xenomorph biology. They’re specifically engineered to genetically drift. Shit, not even drift; the fuckers can take flying fucking leaps from generation to generation depending upon the hosts they take.
An up-and-coming hive experienced genetic drift and the original strain no longer recognized them as their kind.
