hi welcome to ‘mlp is over and I’m still drawing and expanding my headcanons because FUCK what the writers say its My Horses Now’
Realized I never drew Twilight before she was an alicorn and I just,,,,,,, hhhhhhhh and I’ve been watching turnipberry for like years so heres a timeline i guess??????

EDIT: it looked like a WIP and the colors were bothering me so i fixed it (the white outlines took longer to do that the actual drawings flajksdflasdf)

I am going to Pass Out so I will elaborate tomorrow but for now lets say that I’ve always imagined Spike growing longer??? Instead of like the big buff western dragons I always thought that we would be more wyrmy when he got older. I know in Twi’s flashbacks when she hatched him and in the episode where he gave into his greed that he turned into like, the giant typical dragons that we see in the dragon volcanoes but I’ve always considered that to not,,, count, really. I think there’s a difference between when a dragon grows from greed, or another outside magic influence, to just aging naturally.
My sister agrees with me so I feel validated in this opinion

My headcanons are very similar to Earthsong9405’s headcanons (guess who’s been inspiring me to make these for years lmao) sorry shub i’m stealin’ it

Preshow

Twi got her cutie mark when she was 12; just like in the show she got it during her entrance exam into Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns when she, after being startled by RD’s rainboom, let out a burst of uncontrolled magic that hatched the dragons egg that was part of the exam into a healthy dragon. Said egg had been found out next to a mountain beside the White Tail Woods by Celestia herself about 6 years beforehand, in an empty nest. Curious as to why the parents had left it (dragons are known to be incredibly protective towards their eggs), she quickly discovered that it was completely inert, and would never hatch a dragon. So she brought it with her into Canterlot for the professors to use as a test of determination and magical focus into her school.
Which is why Spikes hatching was so baffling to the school’s professors; Twilight, at the age of 12, had not only fertilized a dead and inert dragon egg with her magic, but cast an age spell to speed up his developement so much that he hatched as a fully grown dragon, bursting through the roof of the west hallway. After seeing a dragon appear in the dead middle of Canterlot, Celestia came down to investigate and was able to contain Twilight’s magic until she could control herself again. She also reversed the age spell on Spike so that he was a newborn hatchling and removed the spells Twi had cast on the professors.
Needless to say Twilight was insistently accepted into the school and Celestia took her under her wing as a personal student.
Spike had at first been taken by the school to study and raise, but by then he’d imprinted on Twi and spent the entire time crying and screaming, only calming down when she was brought into the room. He was quickly given to Twilight, and while she had help from her parents and Celestia, she ended up raising him almost entirely on her own. It was normal to see Twilight walking about the Canterlot Library with a small dragon on her back, and sometimes he’d even be toddling slowly behind her after a point. She taught him how to read, do math, all those things librarians do, and is the main reason he has such a love for books and stories. When he was around 6 is when he started trying to help Twi around the study, and with her guide, he became her official #1 assistant (they have mugs, Twi’s is a lovely and sort of sloppy matching #1 mom mug he made with celly’s help for mothers day when he was almost 8). He is fully dependent on Twilight for pretty much everything.

Because of her introverted nature and status as Celestia’s only student, she was frequently targeted by bullies in her classes and occasionally older ponies who were jealous of her status. For the most part she had learned to not listen to the insults and how to keep walking and ignore the bruises, but after the first year the target changed from her to Spike. She was incredibly protective, and this often got her in scuffles with other students who were quick to insult Spike (dragons aren’t highly regarded for the most part by the Canterlot elite). One of which gave her the large scar on her cheek

When Spike was around 2 and a half years old, he had been playing in a lawn of the school alone because Twilight had to run a quick errand for one of the teachers. When she left, a few of the bigger bullies saw this as an opportunity and started to poke at and tease Spike. They broke the toys he had been left with, and started prodding at him to see if he would shoot fire out. Twi quickly made her way back and when they saw her, one of them tried to grab Spike and make a run for it. She obviously freaked the fuck out and ended up in a full on brawl with the bullies.
At this point Twilight still didn’t have much fine control of her magic when it came to more powerful spells, so as a preventative measure against more property damage, the headmaster of the school gave her a magic inhibitor ring on her horn to keep her from accidentally exploding something when a teacher wasn’t around to damage control. Thus she couldn’t use any spells to fight, and because the bullies were much bigger than her, she got beat to shit. However, at a certain point in the fight where it looked like the bullies might win and take off with Spike, she got angry enough that she let out another burst of magic. And while this one, because of the ring, didn’t directly cast any spells on anyone, it was enough to completely shatter the inhibitor, which managed to scare off the colts. The explosion alerted Celestia, and the bullies were swiftly dealt with while Twilight was brought into the medical wing and her wounds tended too.

She had to get a new ring and also wear a horn cap when she was off campus for the next 3 years lol

Twilight was sent off to ponyville to ,“Get some fucking friends for the love of my sister please Twilight” -said by Celestia to herself at some point probably, when she was 21 and had fully graduated from the school. Spike was 9 and had recently learned to control his dragon fire, which came with the unique to him and sick ass ability to teleport small items to a magical tether (Celestia and Twilight in this case, he learned to expand his own tethers after Twilight ascended). As he is a dragon he doesn’t grow in the same time a pony foal would, and doesn’t grow much at all until he gets his greed induced growth spurt after season 2. (each season for my canon lasts about a year, give or take a few months). He’s still dependent on Twilight for the most part, but as is normal in pony society, after he turned ten he is allowed and encouraged to go out and explore the town on his own. This is an important age for fillies and foals (and dragon) as it’s when they start searching for their talents and learn how they can rely on the rest of their community if they need.
Seasons 4-5

Magic, in my headcanons, has 2 modes: Where it wants to be as balanced and harmonic as possible, or where it wants to dissolve into complete entropy. The Elements of Harmony aren’t controlled by a group of good friends, but instead were created by the spirit of harmony and are only controlled by those who they deem are going to use them to achieve their given purpose. This is why Celestia and Luna were able to find and use them after Discord appeared, but Celestia lost the ability to wield the elements after she used them to seal her sister in the moon. Twilight and her friends were given the ability to wield them when Nightmare Moon returned, and stopped wielding them after they returned them to the tree so they couldn’t be used by any specific purpose.
The magic inside of a pony does have an effect on what they look like; unicorns with more magic have bigger horns, pegasi have stronger or bigger wings, and earth ponies have sturdier bones and oft more muscle mass. There is a point, though, where they lost control of the magic and it overwhelms them, which can warp or change their bodies (most often it effects the areas they use to channel magic). Trixie, Sunset, and Starlight (although less so) all tried to wield magic too powerful for them, which warped and twisted their horns. What makes alicorns, alicorns, is that they are able to wield raw magic without being corrupted by it. The magic still ends up changing their bodies significantly, and because its channeled in part through the entire alicorns self, it effects more than just their horns or wings. Twilight gained dark patterns and spots on her back and legs, her hair grows a lot faster, and her horn curled back and darkened. Also she has wings now but

Spikes mostly the same as he is in the show; sarcastic, jokey, a bit oblivious (twi did raise him) but still a loyal and loving friend. He’s started growing out long ways and his spines have finally started poppin up on his back. At his point he and Twilight act more like brother and sister, as he’s much more independent and has started branching out into his own, but he still thinks of her as his mom and gets her presents every mothers day <:

They gots some growth spurts!!!! Because the magic of Equestria wants to be as,, even,, as possible, after Luna’s return and Twi’s ascencion Celestia kind of sort of faded? out of the physical world. She’s still alive and raising the sun, but she has practically no ability to directly effect the goings on of the horses down below. Luna also has less direct control over the physical world, and (after a short stint with twi wink wink) ran off to roam and reside over the woods of the west, where her batponies live for the most part. So Twilight does take over as Queen??? Empress????? not princess but one of those two- of Equestria. At this point the orange undersides of her wings glow from dusk to dawn and she’s gotten a few more markings and stripes in her hair after her transformation from the elements. Like two years prior to what would be season 9 is when she took over, and one of her first moves was creating a treaty with Chrysalis who had come forward and explained her situation, and shortly afterwards revamping the crownsguard back into a standing army to tackle the threats coming from all sides.
Turns out that while Equestria was at peace after the banishment, a lot of the rest of the creatures were stuck outside of the borders, and tensions been brewin’ the entire time. Chrysalis and the Crystal Empire were only the tip of the iceburg (heh), and a lot of outside nations have been lookin for Celestia to fall out of power so they can strike. Times are rough, man, and Twi’s gotta deal with it all mostly by herself.

Spike is really startin to grow by now, he’s very long, very dense and heavy, and has a lot more control over his fire breathing. He’s now Twi’s government sanctioned right hoof dragon, and is often the one tackling communication between Equestria and the other pony nations. Of course he still spends a frankly absurd about of time on Twilight’s back, except now he has to wrap around her to stay on. She must be fuckin ripped now idk man Dragons are heavy its impressive. He’s also the one who started talking to the changelings, and convinced Chrysalis that the newly coronated Twilight would be understanding and willing to help as long as Chrysi took the first step.

‘NOTHER EDIT cuz i cant get enough of this

I wanted to say that while my version of Spike doesn’t have wings, he CAN still fly, it just more of a type of levitation thing. The reason he’s able to teleport with his fire and fly without wings is directly BECAUSE he was hatched with Twi’s magic. He has a pretty impressive innate sense for magic in general, being able to sort of feel when spells near him are cast, and being able to do some minor feats. (minor to him and twilight-most average unicorns have to study for at least a year to teleport things larger than a horseshoe and/or farther than 20 ft).
For visualization sake imagine the dragon from Spirited Away, or even like how Discord sometimes floats around.
After a certain point he also finds it easier to float near the ground and only using his front or back legs to push off than to walk all the time; his torsos just to long for running normally lmao
