It’s not unique to this fandom by any stretch. The amount of work, both safe and adult, lost within the Final Fantasy fandom when some of its past archives just vanished in the early 00’s is earth-shattering, for example.

Really, it’s just a facet of art culture in general. Classical artists are just as notable for destroying beloved works that they were no longer proud of, etc.
