What most ponies don’t know is Lacuna was named for her eyes.

It isn’t a practice that was forgotten, and she certainly isn’t the first one to get her name from her eyes, but everything about them is abnormal from a regular mortal. She is able to (and will always) cast a glamour spell over them to appear mostly normal aside from the milky pupil, which she’s never able to change.

The word Lacuna means “blank space” or “missing part” which sounded cruel to many, but it made sense, since her eyes were so… unusual in themselves.

When she was born, it was almost immediately clear that she was no ordinary peryton. She had horns which was unusual of a female, and her eyes seemed to be… missing.

Not in the traditional sense; there was no blank area where her eyes should be, nor was there flesh, but there seemed to be gaping holes where her eyes were. Her eyelids had formed perfectly, eyelashes as well, and everything acted as it should, but where eyes should be was darkness. Pure black, nothing that would seem like a normal situation of missing an eye. Just a dark, almost three-dimensionally empty area of nothingness.

Of course, changing the way her eyes looked with the spell was easy enough to do for her mother, but no matter what, they could never be changed.

It was unsure what caused this. Aspen is a magical deer, but his magic wouldn’t work with this sort of thing. It was eventually concluded that because Celestia was a divine being, her own abnormal pupils would have interesting effects on her half-mortal child. So instead of a white, glowing pupil, there was simply… a void.

When Lacuna uses her powers of leading ponies to the afterlife, her eyes gain a star-like pupil, and it would be in the same place a pupil should be, but in her empty eyes. It was even complete with a reflection on her eyelids and anything around as if it was a star shining through a window on an otherwise dark night.

No one knows about this issue aside from their family. Her parents, Zodiac, Luna, and Discord are the only ones who remember and are aware of this issue… and a couple of the Apple family, but otherwise, it’s a well kept secret. No one knows what’s lurking in those depths…
