Zephyr Breeze and Trenderhoof met after Trend was interviewing the owner and staff of an up-and-coming hair salon in Manehattan. The two grabbed coffee while Zephyr answered his questions about the shop and they seemed to hit it off right away. They started dating, with Trenderhoof convincing Zephyr that it needed to be kept private for work reasons (because he needed to be seen in a certain light and didn’t want relationship drama to get in the way of his articles). Zephyr gladly agreed to his terms and the two began their long-distance relationship. After about six months, Trenderhoof and Zephyr Breeze made their relationship public, effectively breaking the hearts of many swooning mares who adored Trend. Zephyr dropped everything in Manehattan, his friends, job, and everything he had worked towards, after Trender told him the two should move in together. The two never married, Trender claiming that weddings and marriage were too “mainstream” and not worrying about labels was so much more “in”. Zephyr Breeze went along with it, knowing that being with Trend meant more than some silly ceremony where they bound themselves to each other for eternity. “Totally fine” Zephyr claimed, as he watched his big sister marry the love of her life.
Because Zephyr seemed constantly between jobs, it was easy for the two to start thinking about kids. Trend wanted to write more articles about him and his family, so the best thing to do was to have a child. Fortunately, the couple had plenty of money to spend on a spell that made it possible for Zephyr to carry and deliver a foal. He stayed home during this time, mostly housebound during his pregnancy. But he lived for it, because Trender would bring him the food he was craving, be extra caring, and make sure to document every minute of them together for his articles. Zephyr gave birth to a beautiful filly and Hot Spot became the apple of her fathers’ eye. Trenderhoof was gone for work regularly, which left Papa Zephyr and Hot Spot home. Zephyr crumbled under parenting and to remedy it, Trender hired a stay-in nanny. From then on, Zephyr focused more on dolling up his little girl and playing with her whenever he wanted to, rather than do boring chores like change diapers or fix her meals. He began seeking new work, bouncing job to job as a castle guard, bartender, theatre usher, etc. Anything is could find was good, until he grew bored and his employers realized he wasn’t an ideal canidate.
When Zephyr and Trender’s relationship seemed to lull and lose its spark, Trender decided they should have another child. And Zephyr gladly went along with the plan. After all, their happiest times were when he was pregnant and Hot Spot was newborn. But Trend didn’t want to spend money on spells and the upkeep of it all, so he was convinced that adopting was the best option. Once again, their family was in the spotlight as Trenderhoof did a five part article on their family and the process of the newest addition to their home. They adopted Passion Fruit and Trenderhoof lapped up the public’s attention and praised him and his partner for adopting such a “helpless, unwanted” bat pony colt. For the first couple of years, the family was showered with love from their fans. But when the excitement faded and newer things appeared in the media, their family moved to the background, leaving Trender and Zephyr distanced and their children to wonder where all the fun went.

Y’all don’t even know how much I’m not a fan of Trender or Zephyr, that’s why I thought they’d be perfect together. This started as a random ship I put together long before I created Sugarverse and it was mostly a joke between me and Mac. But the more I planned it out, the more I loved the realistic (and toxic) relationship that formed between these two in my head. I don’t love abusive or toxic relationships at all (coming from a family that has plenty of both), but I know that not all relationships are perfect and happy with everyone having a great time. Giving Zephyr and Trender this dysfunctional family makes it more real for me and I think it really sets up how Hot Spot and Passion Fruit act as adults.
