When things don’t go her way, it doesn’t simply upset Nightlight. It can outright painful — or even scary (cf. this article). Nightlight desperately needs a space where she can feel in control. If she’s forced into a situation where she doesn’t feel in control, she may literally explode in anger. Or she may explode out of fear. These explosive feelings can feel scary even to her.
Nightlight’s big brother is one of few people who make her feel safe and warm. She hardly hugs her parents – but she enjoys hugging her big brother. White Night’s kindness and emotional intelligence can warm the hearts of some of the most stubborn people. When Nightlight goes crazy, his shielding powers can protect her from causing much damage. He has some psychological powers to help him search the heart of a person — and address the heart of the matter. No matter what his sister has done, he is always there to help her become a better friend.
Her big brother’s affection means more to Nightlight than she has liked to admit. She finds great stability and predictability with him. With this sense of security, she is starting to find the courage to try making friends. The thought of needing friends has been scary to her. She doesn’t like the thought of her heart getting broken, and she doesn’t like having to work with those who have very different wishes than hers.
White Night has taught her that the world was created for friendship. He has taught her that friendship is the meaning of life. Thanks to her brother’s example, she is starting to find the courage to give others the love and patience that he’s shown her.
