I can’t wait to see the comments on this one, seriously. I wonder if EqD will refuse to share this one, hehehehe.
So “Freddy Got Fingered” is an interesting movie, and with that I mean there’s no two interpretations of it that are the same. I must have seen about twenty reviews of it, and read about twice that many, and it seems to be one of those movies that still baffles people. It baffles me too. I watched it all the way back in 2001 when it first came out, and I won’t lie that I quite enjoyed it back then. I took it for what it was, yet another stupid crazy comedy in the vein of American Pie or Van Wilder, so I didn’t think much of it. Then when I got online regularly is when I discovered people hated this movie. And it wasn’t until a few years ago that it seemed to have developed a cult following. People see this movie in the light of a practical joke in and on itself. Like the guys from RedLetterMedia said, it’s like the biggest joke in the movie is the movie itself, and there’s several scenes and dialogue that give clues as to what Tom Green’s original intention was. I don’t think the movie is smart enough to say this is true, nor do I think Tom Green was aimless when directing it, but I can’t find myself comfortable in agreeing that this is a misunderstood work of modern Dada art. Nor do I think the movie is actually a clever satire of the gross-out dumb-teenager movies that came out during the late ’90s and early ‘00s.
So where do I fall as of today? I think the movie does have some genuinely funny scenes, if only for how outrageous and stupid and over the top they are, and it’s clear that Tom Green is having fun with it. I can find myself sharing a bit in the triumph of his character and the loser plot of the overall movie, and I will give it this. It’s memorable as fuck. I don’t remember many of the movies that came out at around that time, but I remember Freddy Got Fingered like I just watched it a few minutes ago. So yeah, I think I like this movie just for what it represents. I don’t think I’d recommend it though. I don’t want the responsibility of ruining a person’s sanity looming over my head.
“Freddy Got Fingered” is more than a product of its time. It’s a time-capsule of a movie that feels like it slipped from another universe and into ours, where the line of comedy and absurdity is blurred with a giant marker shaped like a penis. Is it funny or unfunny? Is it clever or dumb? Does it make sense or doesn’t it? Is it art or is it garbage? Or none of those? No clue, but it sure as hell exists, and it’s here to stay within our collective subconscious.
