Description

Another Roan RPG Project piece. Most of the latest stuff I’ve been drawing for them I kept private to make it things you need to get the book to see. But this one I so wanted to share, ‘cuz I really like how it turned out and I guess it doesn’t hurt to signal boost the project more.
Meant as another monster illustration, making a more coloured and up-done illustration for a monster I made a sketch concept of for the creature section.
Most of the creatures I’ve designed for them have been directly inspired by Danish folklores, this one no exception.
Kirkelam:
The Kirkelam, translatable to Church Lamb, is a sort of guardian spirit in old churches. The idea of them came to be during the making of the first churches in Denmark, where the locals were still mixing old believes in with the newcoming Christianity. Being told the church they were building was very special they wanted to secure it further and keep it safe from evil spirits. By installing a harmless spirit so the place couldn’t be haunted by anything worse. Cue the sacrifice of a lamb under the foundation, to ensure the harmless spirit of the young animal would be bound to the church ground.
Later on the spirit would make appearances as a lamb to be seen, or just heard, outside seasons for lambs that young. It would help to keep the evil spirits from haunting the holy grounds of the church. But would also work as a messenger to those who would die soon. Appearing as a sign that they would still have time to get their business in order before they die. Mostly it appeared to those dying of old age.
I’m quite proud of how this thing turned out. The play with shadows and light I think turned out really well. Some of the perspective could definitely been better, I know. Especially the tiles on the ground are off, but I still like the overall image.
Enjoy!
