Tern Tail huffed, plopping down onto the piled pack of flurries below him. His heart felt heavy, as he had just cut off another tie with a pony he knew he didn’t love. Sure, the stallion was very kind and caring, but Tern just couldn’t do it.
Why did he even try? Every relationship he started with a stallion felt forced and painfully empty. There was a hole he tried to fill, but nothing could help. There were times he was happy, but it faded much too quickly. Tern pawed at the snow with a hoof and sighed heavily. He didn’t notice the sound of displacing snow as heavy paws and hooves stepped closer to him. It wasn’t until a shadow cast over him did he look up.
Sirus.
Tern’s heart lept with mixed emotions, and he began to stutter.
“S-Sirus, w-what,” he struggled to find his words. “What are you doing here?” the pegasus asked.
“You looked lonely.” the Draconequus replied calmly and simply, but there was a look of something in his eyes that Tern couldn’t place. Sadness? Tern’s heart shot a pang of guilt through his body and he averted his gaze to the grass poking from the snow compacted on the ground.
Tern spoke again, calmer this time. “I mean, I guess?” he wasn’t sure what to say and his throat started to feel tight. The large creature laid down in front of him to where his hind legs were on their sides, and his paws were crossed in front of himself. Snow stuck to some of his brown toned coat.
The pegasus kept his gaze on his hooves as he gained a sudden interest in his fetlocks. Sirus could sense his ex’s tension, and gave a sympathetic look.
“You still believe what they say?” the Draconequus started. “You believe that what they said can still keep us apart?” Tern winced at these words, old wounds surfacing from the painful memories he begged to forget. Sirus saw the pain he didn’t show, but kept quiet, waiting for a response.
Tern’s mind shifted through all the memories that surfaced. How this whole ordeal started, what happened in the coming days and months, and their eventual fall out. It only took the words of a few hateful ponies to bruise Tern’s self esteem and shatter his love life into pieces. Those ponies were the reason he and Sirus had broken up, why he dated others with no feeling, why he tried to regain what he had lost, why he tried to mask his sadness with bright smiles and laughter.
But it never worked on Sirus. He knew the damage that had been done, the internal scar across both their hearts. Those words were a domino effect that shattered Sirus after they had broken Tern Tail.
“I’m sorry.”
These words startled Sirus out of his thoughts, and deep blue/teal eyes looked into tearful blue ones.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have listened to them.” Tern’s voice sounded like it would crack at any moment, and Sirus moved closer to sooth the pegasus.
“Hush. None of this was your fault.” he placed his forehead against Tern’s and put a heady, brown paw on his hoof. “Don’t you ever think you were in the wrong for this. Those ponies just didn’t know how to keep their muzzles shut, that’s all.” he cooed, nuzzling the feathered horse. Tern sniffed a bit and took a breath to calm his emotions. He was quiet for a long while.
“Happy Hearth’s Warming, by the way.” Sirus said, and laid on his back in frontront of Tern, much like a dog who wanted their belly rubbed. Tern couldn’t help but laugh at this, and his attention was turned upwards to a glowing strand of mistletoe held up by telekinetic magics. He looked down to see the one antler on Sirus’ head glowing. A blush crept up his face and he sputtered.
“S-Sirus?!” he spurted out, a bit surprised. “A-After all I said, you- Mmmph!!”
Tern Tail was cut off by his collar being yanked forward, and his lips meeting the Draconequi’s. His whole body tensed and his feathers raised, but a feeling of joy and love crashed over Tern like a breaking wave. This was something that he felt was true, and not a temporary feeling that he used to feel with other stallions. He relaxed, his eyes drying but his blush remaining. Sirus pulled back for a moment.
“I forgive you, you feathery dork.” he spoke softly.
“Shut up and kiss me again, you big noodle.”
