MY LITTLE PONY: THE MOVIE (1986) REVIEW
originally uploaded: August 2, 2017

Me and MegaDerpWithChese decided to go back to this movie, because our opinions of the series has changed massively, especially after watching the show. And the movie was slightly more tolerable than last time, but not by much… It’s still one of the most annoying movies I have ever sat through. I’m going to explain why, right now. No need for an introduction for this, because EVERYONE should know about My Little Pony at this point…

Plot: The Ponies and critters are getting prepared for a spring festival, however there’s a castle with 3 “evil” villains, a witch named Hydia, and her two children. I’m just gonna say this, I don’t know the names of most of these characters (except for Lickety Split, Mr. Moochick, Hydia and Spike).

  1. Because I didn’t pay attention to the credits
  2. I haven’t watched the G1 series

Apparently, they make some weird purple toxic stuff called ‘Smooze’ by dropping random stuff into a giant pot… and then they pour it into a volcano…? Then two human characters who have absolutely nothing to do with the story tag along… then Some weird scary Puffball creatures called ‘Bushwoolies’………… There’s honestly just way too much going on in this movie! It’s easy to compare this to other movie with no plot! First, we have a Spring festival going on, then Lickety Split thinks she ruined everything by doing her own moves on stage, then evil bad guys want to wipe out the ponies, I really tried to follow this movie! The movie tends to drag scenes for too long, and the pasting is either too slow or too fast!

Characters: Again, I forgot the names of almost everyone. Baby Lickety split has no character, other than being an idiotic annoying pony who cries and does nothing, there’s a scene where she thinks she can fly, but shouldn’t she know that she doesn’t have wings? Spike is also uninteresting, and he sounds like Oogtar from the Super Mario World Cartoon if he were to Inhail a lot of helium. The villains are idiots, and every character is either forgettable or annoying. The evil witch forces her grown children to eat ice cream if they fail to do anything right… WHAT??? HOW IS THAT A THREAT!?!? ITS MORE OF A REWARD THAN A PUNISHMENT! Unless they’re lactose intolerant, then it would make sense. I know this movie is made for really young girls, but even as that, it isn’t very good.

Visuals: Imagine if DIC Animation and Hanna Barbera Decided to collaborate, then you got this movie’s passable, but dull and rushed animation. Yes, I know it’s 1986, but still, The specials before this looked better. You know what, there’s a reason it ended up looking like how it is. It turns out that the animators were on a strict 10 WEEK deadline to finish up the animation for this movie. How its even possible to animate 90 minuts of movie is something I’ll never figure out. In the end, the animation is kind of clean, it can look okay at times, and the backgrounds are very beautiful. but unfortunately, the colors are a little bit washed out, the character designs (while kinda cute at times) can look pretty creepy, and the eye colors of one character looks like she has been possessed by the demons of hell! It can get visually appealing and sometimes very colorful, but everything else is… well… okay at best. I’ve also noticed that the animation would speed up at times, and sometimes slow down! You’d swear that you’re monitor is broken but the movie itself is broken. Not to mention the awful transitions, the movie would sometimes fade to black when a character isn’t even done talking! I’m normally a huge fan of Traditional Hand drawn western Cel Animation, but this movie doesn’t look the best, but then again, there are movies that are WAY uglier. You want some examples? Look at Video Brinquedo.

Sound & Music: While they do have the theme song in the film, which they did a decent job on, the rest of the soundtrack is just generic, annoying and forgettable (mainly the lyric songs). The instrumental stuff is enjoyable enough, but I cannot say the same for the songs with lyrics. The voices are some of the most annoying I’ve ever heard in a movie! And the characters never… shut… up! and don’t even get me started on the villains! Ugh, I do not like the villains at all. They are loud, obnoxious and dull…

Verdict: Its still a pretty bad movie in my opinion, The animation is lazy, the characters are idiots, the voices are like squeaking clear wrapping, and the musical numbers are some of the worst I’ve ever heard. I wouldn’t recommend it, unless you’re either a die hard MLP fan, or if you’re REALLY curious like me. It’s boring, lazy, annoying, and very generic. But in all honesty, I think the best way to describe how bad this movie is, I’d say that this movie would fit in the “So Bad its Good” category, It has some moments where it can be pretty funny from how bad it gets, either from the voices, transitions, or anything else. But as a MOVIE, it’s just bad… However, that wasn’t the only theatrical film the series ever got, The Modern MLP Reboot has three other theatrical films. Two of them being based on Equestria Girls, and the other based on Friendship is Magic, it is set to be released this October. I’m honestly really glad the series was given a GOOD reboot, because the old series looked very generic in my opinion… But I can’t be too harsh on this movie, I mean, it is for little girls. But I just don’t think it would be worth your time, unless you have young children to show it to. In conclusion, it’s one of the most annoying movies I’ve ever had to sit through. This isn’t the worst movie ever made, but it’s still not good in my opinion. If you ask me, they should’ve based this off of the 1984 Special ‘Rescue at Midnight Castle’

But the movie itself managed to get itself a 10 part sequel, titled ‘The End of Flutter Valley’ I haven’t seen any of them, but I might get into it, if I ever get around to anyway.

    Final Score:
    4.8/10.0 (Bad)
