The wind howled and cut the cold deep through my bundles of clothes as I stepped forward into the snow. I ruffled the feathers of my wings, trying to warm up a bit, but to no avail. For a moment I considered turning around, waiting for a better time of year to try again… after I got out of jail… who am I kidding, they’d never let me go.
This was it, now or never, I turned to look back at me as the large door to Vault 6 resealed itself in the side of the mountain that it had been built in. Just before the door blocked my view of the inside, I caught a glimps of the guards hacking opent the door I had locked. One took a shot at me but missed badly, I could hear the bullet rickochette before the door fully closed, sealing me outside in the wastes. Then darkness.
There was no way I couldve pulled this off during the day, too many ponies up and about, walking around, somebody wouldve just tackled me and that wouldve been the end of it.
I braced myself against the wind, holding in the darkness against a threat I couldnt see, I could be standing in front of a sheer cliff and I wouldnt know it in this darkness. I tapped my PipBuck on my left foreleg and turned on the light. It shown a sickening green color on the knee deep snow around me.
“Damn, I shouldve changed the color on this stupid thing to something more tasteful before I left…. Too late for that I suppose.”
I looked around at the surrounding cliffs. Sure enough, there was a drop off to my left that wouldve claimed me if I had jumped around just a little bit. To my right it looked like there was a path with accomidating support bars to keep one from slipping.
I made my way to the decline carefully. So far, I had been taking my first time in the outside relatively well. I was shivering, but I’ll blame that on the cold. The darkness of the night and the snow felt claustrophobic in nature, much like the inside of the Vault, maybe that’s why I felt like I hadnt really left yet.
I finally reached the bars… or what was left of them. They were old and rusted, some were totally covered in snow and ice, making them pretty well useless to try grabbing ahold of.
“Well, nothing ventured….” My words trailed off as I swallowed the lump in my throat and took a step forward….
