He’s the prince of the sea - or he would be if he actually did his duty. His entire job revolves around the tides. Beings as Equestria needed princesses with divine power just to raise the moon and the sun and needed to manually change the seasons, it only seemed natural that they needed a pony to keep the ocean’s tides in check. Normally, this would be done by the moon, but that would only work in a world where everything automated itself. That being said, the tides of the ocean were out of control. One day they’d be at high tide, the next, nearly drained out. And so, the Wendigos, the real rulers of Equestria, bestowed upon the land a young foal. This foal already had his cutie mark, much to the surprise of many, and even more so, this foal was an alicorn! Of course, it was obvious what he was sent to them to do, and that was to balance out the tides. He was trained in this magic, and only this magic, and as such he wasn’t great at any other magical abilities. But as he grew and became a young, teenage pony, he grew annoyed at his duties, and promptly began to shirk them, instead using his water-based magic to mess with other ponies around Canterlot. Although their princesses were revered, this little prince was not. Most of Canterlot just finds him to be a nuisance, and though he puts up a front of rebellion, it still sticks to him. He holds a lot of pain from all the mean comments those other ponies made about him. He was ordered to leave Canterlot and go on a journey to Ponyville, Manehattan, Appleoosa, and many other Equestrian cities and towns until he “grew up”, as they put it. He would be escorted by a pair of Canterlot guards at all times to make sure he didn’t goof off, one night guard and one day guard, although Tidal and the night guard sometimes tend to get into some mischief together in the dead of night, causing the day guard to be royally pissed off at the two of them. Tidal has to hide his wings underneath a jacket when he goes out to keep from arousing suspicions and such about his alicorn-hood.
