Oh. That makes more sense. I thought the idea was that they were there to hold it together rather than the exact opposite of that.
Here we go.
The original crack was drilled out to stabilize it so it wouldn’t crack any further. The rivets were put in the new wider crack so the two sides wouldn’t rub against each other.
