This is a creation of mine. The backstory is that back when Discord ruled Equestria, he decided to play a horrible joke on Celestia by diguising himself as a young male unicorn, who the young sun princess grew attached to. At one point of the relationship, they had intercourse. This is when Discord reviled his true form, shocking Celestia. After the lord of chaos’ defeat, Celestia called her sister, Luna, to her bed chambers where Celestia showed an infant alicorn foal, with dark blueish gray coat, dark brown mane and tail with a blue sash mark. Celestia told Luna to find a way to get rid of the colt, for fear that the child may inherent his father’s chaotic power and dark power. Luna obeyed, but before disposing the colt, he opened his sapphire blue eyes, looking up at Luna, who just didn’t have it in her heart to destroy this, as she said it, “a gift from the moon itself”. Luna ended up raising the young colt, who she later named NightShade, to be one of the few ponies in all of Equestria to gain a loving of the night, showing respect to any pony in the Lunar Republic (old one before Nightmare Moon), and to be on of the kingdom’s best war stallions, eventually founding his own branch of the Old Lunar Republic’s military called the NightinGale. This also had it’s own share of problems, as NighShade grew a type of animosity towards Princess Celestia, the mother who wanted her own son gone from Equestria because of her own fears. His disrespect for Celestia was known be almost all of medieval Equestria, to the point he would call her a cow in public. Eventually, when Nightmare Moon declared night for all eternity, NightShade left Luna’s side, for he had no desire to see a world with no sun. despite his views of Celestia, he know of her importance to the world, and knew that Celestia may not have been a good parent, but she was still his mother by birth. He was one of the ponies, along with his old friend Maximus Sparkle (Twilight Sparkle’s ancestor) to lead the charge against Nightmare Moon and helped Celestia in banishing her to the moon, where he gained his eclipse cutie mark, and the nickname, “The Avatar of Harmony”.  
After Nightmare’s defeat, Princess Celestia offered him a chance to be the ruler of the night until Luna returned, and that the NightinGale could be it’s protectors. NightShade refused, saying that the only pony worthy of ruling the night and being his best friend was exiled for a thousand years. He shortly opened a portal to Tartarus, where he and the NightinGale entered so that he could “meet his father for the first time”.  
A millenium after the Nightmare Moon’s defeat, NightShade and the NightinGale returned to find a changed Equestria, and that Luna has returned. With this, NightShade hopes to resurrect a New Lunar Republic, unite it with the Solar Empire, find the six wielders of harmony, and save Equestria from a coming foe who’s very presence sends fear to even Galaxus and Auroarus (Celestia and Luna’s parents, and Masters of Space and Time).
