Some groups behave on the assumption that the world they’re playing in operates on a base level of rationality. Others… don’t.

I have no doubt some D&D old-timers are going, “Pfft, breaking the sound barrier? Figured that out ages ago.”

DM: Well, quality over… volume.

Rainbow Dash: Ah, it’ll probably work out. So I’m getting a cheer bonus from you all, which is good… But if we’re getting that for free, then I’m probably gonna need WAY more to make this a sure thing.
DM: The metagaming begins.
Applejack: Ah think “contest will be hard” is a pretty reasonable assumption.
Twilight Sparkle: It’s an athletics competition, so… maybe some kind of signature move? Anyone have any ideas?
Pinkie Pie: I know! A Sonic Rainboom! Rainbow Dash goes so fast that she breaks the sound barrier, and the atmospheric refraction from the shockwave reflects the rainbow of her mane for miles!!
Twilight Sparke: Okay… Any more feasible ideas?
